Miami Masters 'Battle of the Boards' pick 'em 2009

The MIAMI MASTERS 1000 'BATTLE OF THE BOARDS' PICK 'EM contest is now open for entries at http://www.britishtennis.net/Competitions.html

Qualifiers will be placed at about 22.00 GMT (6 pm US EDT) on Tuesday, but you are welcome to enter before that if you need to, as long as you don't mind picking matches involving qualifiers 'blind'.

Entries will close at 14.00 GMT (10 pm US EDT) on Wednesday.

As usual, if anyone would like to encourage potential new team members by telling them how much fun these competitions are, please go ahead.

Good luck!

--------------------------------------------------------

Advance notice - schedule for the rest of the year

The next BOTB pick 'em after Miami will be for the Rome Masters 1000. We have decided to drop Monte Carlo from the pick 'em calendar this year now that it is not a mandatory event any more. We have never run a pick 'em for the last clay court Masters event before RG, so we will not do Madrid either.

N.B. 2008 MC and Rome points will come off after Rome 2009 and players will continue to count their best 7 scores over the previous 12 months, so with points for slams continuing to be available to count twice, it will become best 7 from up to 13 scores instead of best 7 from up to 14.

However, the main reason for cutting the number of events we run pick 'ems for by one is to keep them fresh. As well as the teams comp and the different scoring and ranking systems, one of the main things that makes our pick 'ems different from the ATP bracket challenge is the way they generate so much discussion on many of the forums taking part and it was noticeable that a bit of pick 'em 'fatigue' set in last year after a run of virtually back-to-back contests, not just among the organisers (though that is obviously a big issue too!) but also among the entrants.

I think the calendar that follows gives us a good spread of competitions through the year. It certainly gives us a more manageable workload so that we can do each competition justice with reports and so on. Also, since there will now be at least two free weeks between each competition, we hope it will leave most of you refreshed and eager to take part each time a new contest comes around! If 9 pick 'ems (covering 14 weeks) per year is not enough for you, there's always the ATP Bracket Challenge to keep you going!

Jan 19-Feb 01 : AUSTRALIAN OPEN (slam - points can be counted twice in your best 7)

Mar 25-Apr 06 : Miami

(no pick 'em for the Monte Carlo Masters, which is now a non-mandatory tournament)

Apr 27-May 04 : Rome

(no pick 'em for Madrid)

May 25-Jun 08 : ROLAND GARROS (slam - points can be counted twice in your best 7)

Jun 26-Jul 06 : WIMBLEDON (slam - points can be counted twice in your best 7)

Aug 10-Aug 17 : Montreal

(no pick 'em for Cincinnati, unless the organisers both end up on holiday during Montreal in which case we'll do Cincy instead of Montreal)

Aug 31-Sep 14 : US OPEN (slam - points can be counted twice in your best 7)

Oct 12-Oct 19 : Shanghai

Nov 08-Nov 16 : Paris

to be fair, i am happy with that.

so if you do well in the slams, your 7 results can come form the slams as they count double?

Stevens scoring system is more complicated than the ATP's!! i propose from next year we double the points, then alter the breakdown and re-brand the pick'em as pick it's. there life is much easier now. Simples

Yes, but it would mean 3 pick 'ems starting in 5 weekends - I think we did that at one point last year but it meant nothing but work and pick 'em (and the odd few hours sleep) for a month and there are even more entrants now, so I can't do that again.

Bethan and I have agreed that it's better to do a more manageable number and do them well - it's not as if there aren't plenty of more automated comps if you want to do this kind of comp for every event.

I'm quietly confident (well not so quietly seeing as I have just told you) about this one. My picks are very conservative except I have gone all out and picked Tsonga as the winner. With a lot of very difficult to call first round matches it's hard to pick against the seed in R2.

i am not so confident here, i looked back at my picks and a lot seemed to go with seeding/more famous players. which one am i good at again? i think maybe Rome. hopefully steven wont cancel that one.

hopefully shedboy forgot to enter (but he has been around recently so maybe he remembered) and i can continue to build my h2h lead over him.

Yes,  It's hard to go against a seed in rd 2 when in fact you are predicting 2 successive wins for that unseeded player.

In these tourneys where there are byes for the seeds, it's really tempting just to guarantee having all your 2nd winning picks to be still OK after the 1st round by picking the seeds to win in rd 2.

Perhaps there could be some incentive in the scoring system to encourage people against this - perhaps  3pts for a win in rd 2 for a player who played in the first round ?

Federer is going to win one of these events eventually - so I'm going to keep picking him until he does!

Hopefully the fact I bottled my original pick of Nalbandian to win the title won't come back to haunt me, although I now have him losing to Murray, so I'll just about accept that to happen.

i agree FD. i have been sticking with Fed for ages, but he keeps letting me down. i have had to go for Rafa. that way either i am happy if Fed wins, or i am happy if Rafa wins as i win the pick em.

Andy gets left out i'm afraid.

For goodness sake, this Pickem's only been going a matter of hours and I've already been hit by a GEM who couldn't be bothered to complete his match.

What's the matter Llodra ? Suddenly remember that you'd booked a table at a local restaurant halfway through your game ?. Thats right don't mind my 'pickem' results, you just slip off and have a nice meal. You have played a whole set after all, what more could anyone ask of you.

Why do I bother with GEMs ?
