The All-Gabon Lawn Tennis Championships 2008

Yesterday, I was enjoying an early morning mug of Redbush tea, excited about the first days' play at The All-Gabon Lawn Tennis Championships, when suddenly I got a call saying I should get down to the tennis sub-council buildings in Kinshasa a.s.a.p.  So - obedient as ever - I did.

Now - hungry... tired... in the depths of The Congo... with stinky feet...and a bit of a cough.

...cough.

This is the story...

It appears that the world of tennis has at last imploded...

On Saturday, Cruella D'Ville declared that he would not be stepping down as the president of the Trustees of the World Intermediary Tennis Sub-council, despite the Angolan coming under an increasing amount of pressure after instigating controversial changes to the tour.

D'Ville (the former president of the Hanna Barbera Corporation) announced, "I'm smarter than your average bear."  Adding later, "Ain't that right Booboo."

Sadly for us tennis enthusiasts, Booboo's response has yet to be transcribed.

D'Ville has been responsible for overhauling the TWITS management structure, as well as the introduction of Flamingo-Eye and the short-lived Chubby Chaffinch debacle.  He has also overseen the introduction of the innovative new idea of doubling all ranking points for next season.  2009 will be DOUBLE POINTS.  Exciting news indeed.

Anyhow, a few hours ago, an astonishing spectacle occurred when the three most-recognisable players in men's tennis today - Komlavi Loglo, Bogdan "Victor" Leonte and Raven Klaasen - stormed the tennis council buildings and demanded the head of d'Ville.

These three players, in particular, all have major personal gripes against d'Ville...

    * A couple of days ago, the sub-council won an Anti-Trust case against Leonte after he claimed d'Ville had stolen his favourite Adidas sports bag and matching picnic-basket.  "Mr Ranger ain't gonna like that, Yogi," the president exclaimed.

    * Komlavi Loglo has also been convinced of d'Ville's misdemeanours. He claims the president had poached a large number of pups from his Togoan hippo farm, and has been using them in his hushed-up leather-coat manufacturing plant.  Rather incriminatorily, d'Ville's only reaction was, "Razzafrackinbrackingraffinbrackin..."

    * And Klaasen has been in a right stroppy mood all week after d'Ville publicly claimed that Klaasen was "over-ranked" - this has caused a huge furore, especially on the raven.klaasen.net messageboard, resulting in the site's founder, Gazeboman, to self-combust with rage (never to be seen again).  Lord Pi commented, "ist the kid of hinge he re acts to dably."

Anyhow back to yesterday's events - the coup had been going on for a few hours, with only the occasional yelp from within the council chambers disturbing the hushed silence.  When suddenly d'Ville fled the building with two henchmen in tow, and made a quick getaway on motorbike and sidecar.

And so it looks as though the coup has been successful, and the old regime has been toppled.

Loglo, Leonte & Klaasen are now in sole control of world tennis.

The Triad is born.

Oh my god...

The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

...cough.

I wonder if the Gabon Tennis Federation is the only national tennis federation in the world whose main email address is a hotmail address smile - see http://www.gtp.gr/TDirectoryDetails.asp?id=53602

I think the ITF has a stated policy of trying to popularise tennis in as many African countries as possible by organising Futures in seemingly random locations, which seems fair enough.

Edit: they did have a DC team in 2001-2004 which has beaten Senegal once and Uganda twice. They seem to have disbanded it after 2004's won 0 rubbers lost 12 in a RR group with Nigeria, Mali, Senegal and San Marino.

Post of the year, no contest. biggrin (even if it risks making half of us - well, me anyway! - too embarrassed to ever post here again!)

'Tears of laughter' lines included:

Stevie : "Interesting.  That is only the third time Lord Pi has spelt the word 'you' correctly in 1660 posts.  The last time was on the 10 Sept 07 in the thread on Indonesia F2."

Panda : "Why is Raven's 10-year-old prodigy brother, Seagull Klaasen, still being forced to play in the juniors surely he should have been given a WC in the quarters here. furious.gif"

Dru : "Raven won 6-2 6-1 biggrin.gif" (masterful placement wink)

... but really there are too many to mention. biggrin

The Collapsing Legend

The tablet bearing 'The Legend of Komlavi Loglo' has started to crack... big time.

The favourite for the Beijing Olympics and the Togoan flag-bearer, crashed out of the Olympics in the first round to a South African Kevin.  And although Loglo has probably already written himself in the history books as one of the greatest players ever, it has caught us all by surprise, by how similar the speed of his plummet has been to dropping defecated hippo poo.

And yesterday things went from really bad to even worse, as the former king of Togo was ignominiously dumped out of Gabon F1, beaten (coincidentally) by King Barry of Ireland 6-2 6-2.

Komlavi Loglo insists he is not worried by his rapid fall in rankings.

"For me, honestly, ranking two, three, four, five, 25, 721, it doesn't really matter a whole lot. It is either number one or being in the main draw," said Loglo.

Fattar Anas (the 8th seed who yesterday saw off Duncan Mugabe), said "He, the best ever.  No more to say.  He made us chase.  We chased.  We caught."  Anas pondered for a while. "... Well some of us caught... Not me... But I keep chase.  I chase.  I just chase."  Poor Anas then started to cry.

Loglo insisted he has no plans to retire in the near future, and is looking forward to the new playing conditions in 2009. "How could I retire! 2009 - It's DOUBLE POINTS!!"
