Week 45 - Challenger (37.5k+H) - Eckental, Germany

QR1: Jonathan Marray WR 473 v Nils Langer (GER) WR 984
QR1: Daniel Evans WR 561 v (q7) Philipp Oswald (AUT) WR 406

They should have tried qualies in Kazakhstan, only six ranked players there ranging from 688 to 1411.

Not the worst draw for either of them, as there's no-one particularly unbeatable in qualies - Jonny should have a decent chance of qualifying, while it's a good chance for Dan to see what level he has against challenger level players

I agree with wolf, it's not often you get a hard court Challenger where you can be ranked outside the top 1000 and only have to play one match against another player ranked outside the top 1000 to pick up the points for qualifying!

I guess the problem would have been getting to Kazakhstan, as the flights probably would cost a lot more and may not have been worth it if the draw was stronger.

I'm sure that was the problem, but I think was fairly predictable that the draw would be weak enough to make it worth it.

Btw there's a webcam pointed at the Eckental scoreboard at http://www.mgn-atp.de/webcam.jpg

Maybe the other players are aware of the 2009 ranking changes and how valuable these points from the late in 2008 are going to be once we are part way through 2009 and hence putting in even more effort than usual.

Disappointing if they have both lost, but hopefully Dan can learn from this experience for Jersey and Helsinki at the end of the year

Jonny's retirement was due to a back muscle pull during the warm-up, which while frustrating is relatively minor, apparently - he should be fit again within days, thankfully.
