Not the worst draw for either of them, as there's no-one particularly unbeatable in qualies - Jonny should have a decent chance of qualifying, while it's a good chance for Dan to see what level he has against challenger level players
I agree with wolf, it's not often you get a hard court Challenger where you can be ranked outside the top 1000 and only have to play one match against another player ranked outside the top 1000 to pick up the points for qualifying!

I guess the problem would have been getting to Kazakhstan, as the flights probably would cost a lot more and may not have been worth it if the draw was stronger.
Maybe the other players are aware of the 2009 ranking changes and how valuable these points from the late in 2008 are going to be once we are part way through 2009 and hence putting in even more effort than usual.

Jonny's retirement was due to a back muscle pull during the warm-up, which while frustrating is relatively minor, apparently - he should be fit again within days, thankfully.
