RE: Cincy 2008 Battle of the Boards pick 'em competition

Hardly the most auspicious start for me with Fish but at least Gulbis and the big Ivo has retrieved the situation slightly

Go Federer.... gone for a huge risk with him winning the title, and I'd be surprised if the top 4 seeds all reached the semi finals... but that's what I've gone for.

Me too. I went for the Amoeba cry.gif - when I was doing Billy's entry, it turned out the bookies had done the same though, as had 45% of the entrants. With Gulbis and Ivo being heavy fvourites for their matchs, that's likely to leave those of us who picked Fish in the bottom half.

The player the bookies seem to disagree the most with us about is Youzhny - they have Tommy Haas beating him in R1!

QUICK UPDATE

This is the first AMS BOTB with more than 200 entrants and the number of teams with more than 5 entrants in double figures,

As usual, it's going to be a while before there are any results up (though it will be before the end of Monday UK), but if you know your picks and want to work out which matches are the most crucial, there's a provisional picks % analysis up and you can get to it via http://www.britishtennis.net/Competitions.html

From Tuesday, there will be reasonably frequent intra-day updates.

Eek Fish is already 5-1 down against Rock On. That's a bit early for things to go that wrong.

I don't mind messing up with Fish so much. What I want to know is why I put faith in a mental midget frenchman against a decent player like Querrey.

Clearly I didn't learn from Dammit during the Clay season. ashamed

Edward Seater as an opponent - nearest I'll ever get to having a chance of beating a pro tennis player at a tennis-based game!!!

By the way - Steven, why are you not representing BT.net?!!!!

My semifinalist and serial bull killer Mikhail Youzhny lost.

I can't remember a worse first day of a pick 'em - lots of 50/50 matches to pick, all of which went against me, plus a couple of results so weird I didn't even consider the possiblilty of them going the wrong way. cry

The most annoying one was Gonzo out-muppeting Berdbrain furious since that match was 3-pointer, i.e. virtually everyone had their winner from that match winning R2 as well.

Also the bookies must have known something I didn't about Youzhny or Haas because I picked Youzhny, saw when I did Billy's entry that the bookies had gone for Haas, thought surely not, did searches on both of them to see if e.g. Youzhny had picked up an injury in Toronto, didn't find anything and assumed that the bookies had lost the plot on that one. ashamed

Btw, I notice there's no sheddie in the list, so I can declare the Count the winner of the infamous duel for Cincy already. biggrin

Is that a jar of jam you're holding about your head, Count? I guess you salvaged the one jar Bethan didn't take with her ... wink

I don't know if any of you have noticed, but some of Centre Court's most successful pickers are playing as independents this time due to a major bust-up on their forum. (too many prima donna's in the no. 1 team, I hear you shout wink.gif)

Anyway, it's produced a couple of limericks there that are worth sharing.

From Nick Havoc:

With B-O-T-B resurrected,
The board will, again, be infected
With posters all stressed.
Can CC stay the best,
Since our top-rated players defected?

Lex added a 2nd verse - you need to be aware of who the Wimby pick 'em champion was to get this. I trust parts of this will get censored in the usual way:

I trust we'll all do our bit
To pull ourselves out of the ****
I'm sure we'll succeed
Or we'll all be très peeved
If beaten by a Playboy Nude's *****

I've added another verse and done a runner:

In the pick of the board battling teams
Not all's sweetness and light as it seems
They've lost whip-wielding Pebs
Now they're left with the plebs
Could that end all their world-beating dreams?

... if they come here looking for me, tell them I've gone THAT way! (he says, heading off in the other direction wink.gif)
