Week 25 - ATP Nottingham - 2008 - Main Draw

Just a small request to people - can we please have two different threads for qualies and the main draw? smile.gif Given how active the site is these days, posts disappear extremely fast. It's very hard to dig out rankings, predictions etc. regarding the main draw (singles and doubles) matches - as the main draw is made before the second day of qualies.

Just a request, of course - if you like it, please use this thread for discussion regarding the main draw, WCs etc. and start a new one when the qualies draw is out. And if you don't like it, continue in this thread itself!

RE: Week 25 - ATP Nottingham - 2008.

Wild cards should ideally go to (meaning it probably won't happen) - Bloomers, Wardy and Slabba.

And please don't give one to Boggo - it's for his own good, actually.

I think most people would agree with you on the Boggo issue, will do him good to go through qualies. Really should be able to beat Sirianni on grass. get him some match practice as well.

I'd probably make Evo qualify even if he beats Malisse. Qualies can teach you a lot and sooner or later, he'll have to attempt them at Tour/Challenger level - better to have an experience of them in his own country.

For that matter, don't count out on Evo getting a singles / doubles WC here. He's based at Nottingham.

Who else is going? biggrin.gif The last trip ever for me (ironically couldn't come at a better time... for want of a better term!!!!) cos I starts me teaching qualification in September and wouldn't be able to go next year anyway...

Gutted this is the last year at Nottingham. I only live down the road in Mansfield and enjoy going each year.

I'm going next saturday to watch Qualifiers and then the following Saturday to the Finals.
Hope the Brit's do us proud one last time.

Shame on LTA for moving it away. We don't all live down south.

Think Ward will get one after his performance this week, and Bloomers will as well if he wins tomorrow. If he loses, then I think Slabba and Goodall will get the other 2 WC's, but on the BBC today they said Baker might be back for Wimbledon, so I'd imagine he may get a WC.

Boggo shouldn't get one as he needs to win some matches and get some confidence, and so must go through qualifying, but should be given a WC into that if necessary (as should Skupski and Marray for not getting them this week)

Jamie Baker will indeed play at Nottingham if he feels he's fit enough, which I believe he does(????)

Is this a good idea or not though? His first match back, a main tour match......it's hard to see him winning it no matter who he draws. Good for Jamie of course, and we all wish him well but a waste of a wild card? It comes at the expense of another player, try to imagine it was between Jamie and either James Ward or Slabba.....then what do you think?

If Baker is back, he should be made to qualify - surely he needs a lot of match practice before he can beat top 100 players again?

baker will probably take a md wc, mainly cause of the money i think.

arka i think you are getting a bit ahead of yourself, i think jamie has only beatwn peya in the top 100 in a competitive match.

it will be good to see him back but dont build him up too high

The Calleri match was competitive, too - dead, okay, but not an exho.

I worded my post wrong, actually! smile.gif I wanted to mean that he needs to have a lot of match time under his belt before he has a chance against top 100 players.

Now that the Wimbledon WC's have been anounced, and more importantly the Wimbledon Qualies WC's, there isn't many Brits left to offer one at Nottingham to. Jamie Baker is surely a cert now(?) whilst if Boggo gets one he'll have had Wild Cards for Surbiton, Queens, Nottingham and Wimbeldon. Hmmm!

With so many to be tied up in Wimbledon Qualies, who else is there to give one to? Another foreign player or another British youngster (like Dan Evans at Queens)?
