Just because you retire, it doesn't mean you go off the ranking list though.

I think it is a matter of choice, some allow their ranking to fade away and some drop out immediately.

Thought when female players retire they automatically go off the rankings like Davenport and Cljisters did

Sharapova To Take Over No.1 Ranking

ST PETERSBURG, FL, USA With the announcement of her immediate retirement from professional tennis, and at her request, World No.1 Justine Henin will be removed from the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings. As such, the next rankings to be released on Monday, May 19 will see the current No.2, Russian Maria Sharapova, assume the top spot for the fourth time in her career.

I'm not sure what's more shocking - no story on the BBC site about Anne (let's find a bad news story about tennis instead - aha we can dig up the betting scam) or the LTA still not covering Ken's title or Alex's wonder run?!
