A solid enough win for James, but another abject loss for Miles. I wonder what's happened to him - he seemed to be going quite well, had effectively made it into the top 500 and then lost two of the points he'd gained when he defaulted against Carsten Ball last month (we still don't know what for) and since then, nothing's gone right.
L32: (4) James Ward WR 483 beat Lance Vodicka (USA) WR 728 by 7-6(4) 6-4 L32: (6) Miles Kasiri WR 504 lost to Adam Fass (USA) WR 740 by 3 & 4
L16: (4) James Ward WR 483 v Peter Shults (USA) WR 623
Shults, career high 600, has had an extra day's rest since breaking a 7-match losing streak in R1 here. He has lost to Kennaugh and Baker in the last year, not to mention losing to Amadeus & partner in doubles last September. However, he beat James & partner in a doubles SF in Tuxtla Gutierrez a couple of months ago. JAmes should have too much for him in singles though.
The other seed in this quarter is (8) Luigi Dagord (ITA) WR 544.

A shame for Miles. He made the Wimby final and has had his injuries and fall outs with LTA since. He had a few runs in futures last year but hasn't improved on those scores, nothing beyond futures quarters this year. Last years bigger points will start coming off soon, he could do with putting on few more on to his score.
I've seen Miles play a couple of times, very solid, very competent. He didn't have obvious "big" shots though and his game was very unvaried. He reminds me of a Martin Lee quote that, when a junior he would turn up and win matches but in the senior game, that just didn't happen, your game had to take on something extra and the problem with many British juniors was that they stopped learning. That may be unfair but watching Miles play always reminds me of that.

Very disappointing! It's not much of a consolation - & certainly no excuse - but Miles wasn't the only one to suffer like that: Milan Pokrajac, the third seed from Canada & WR 461, lost tamely to Phillip Simmonds (577) 3 & 4, Chris Lam (706) was seen off by an unranked qualifier 2 & 4, Shane La Porte (690) by Matthew Roberts (811), Haydn Lewis (628) by Paul Todd (793) 3 & 4 & even Alexander Sadecky (556) to Ward's R2 opponent, Peter Shults 4 & 2! It looks as though it was just one of those days when certain players (six, to be precise) were fated to lose without much of a struggle to others ranked quite a few places below them!
Wardy makes it 4/4 today for the Brits in singles today! :)
L16: (4) James Ward WR 483 beat Peter Shults (USA) WR 623 by 2 & 3
QF: (4) James Ward WR 483 v (Q) Marcus Fugate (USA) WR 835
Fugate had a career high of 674 back in 2006 when he was 18 but hadn't reached a Futures semi for over 6 months until he got to one in Canada last month.
James is one of just two seeds left in the draw here - unfortunately the other, the no. 1 seed, is in the same half of the draw and is Artem Sitak, the guy who ended Jamie Baker's winning streak.
Unfortunately Miles' result has been made to look even worse by the player who beat him losing 4 & 2 to a WC ranked outside the top 1000 today.

The rain has delayed play on Friday April 18. As of 11:30, the play will not begin before at least 1pm. The best estimate is approximately 2 hours after the rain stops.
James was first up on court at 10am local so not clear if he got started, finished or half done ?
* pinches you * (then runs very fast!) - no, you're not dreaming!
Very wise! Thank God for that, though it had started to go downhill a bit, singles-wise, today - until, that is, Josh went & dumped out the second seed in straight sets in Mexico City!
