Jamie Baker is in for a bit of a baptism of fire as he returns to Challengers in the country where he won his first ever Futures titles:

Preview: Jamie lost to Mayer 7-6(5) 6-2 in R1 in Champaign last November, though this year's Jamie Baker might be feeling that the closeness of the 1st set gives him some hope in this match!

Gah, Jamie finally returns to Challengers and gets a shocker of a draw. Time to start getting comfy at this level though Jamie, it's where you belong.

Jamie has teamed up with Ross in the doubles here. Their first opponents are Soeda and Vilarrubi (JPN/URU).

L32: Jamie Baker WR 220 lost to (1) Leonardo Mayer (ARG) 151 by 1 & 4 cry

It's not that surprising that Jamie lost to the no. 1 seed, but I thought he'd make it closer given that Mayer is not quite inside the top 150. It's too early to drawn any conclusions, obviously, but I've got the impression in the past that he prefers playing at ATP level (even ATP Q), in front of reasonable crowds, or at Futures level, where he can dominate and finds Challengers harder to do well in than either of those first two.

was hoping for closer than that. but again it was a step up for jamie and will take time to adjust. i still worry if he has the wepons to win consistently at this level.

would seem like he found his way into the match after a bad start, maybe with time he will get up and running quicker at this level. for players like jamie its not going to be overnight but a long grind. although even if he loses a string of matches i think he must contiune to tough it out and not drop back to futures

was a grim draw, hopefully him and boggo can console each other in puerto rico ans hopefully not darw each other (till the final)

in a way its a shame as a challenger with the top seed outside the top 150 is quite rare isnt it.

Yes, very rare - Jamie picked his tournament well, just got a dud draw and seemingly had a bit of a sluggish start to the day. You're right that 6-4 in the 2nd isn't too bad, in the sense that losing 4 & 4 would have been perfectly respectable.

Had hoped for better than that!

Where will he go next?

Easy peasy for Hutch & the Baker Boy:  2 & 1. smile Only trouble is, they now face the fourth seeds, Evans & Kuznetsov (US/US), in the QFs... hmm

Good for them. clap.gif I have to agree with you however, Stircrazy, it'll be tough to get past the next round. Fingers crossed teamwork.gif
