RE: Robert Dee - British Tennis Professional - Beltranena comes back to regain the record

The Telegraph are taking sadistic pleasure at their win, it seems:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/7644181/Worlds-worst-tennis-player-loses-again.html

The headline 'World's worst' tennis player loses again (note the quotes) did make me laugh though. smile

According to http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=1&storycode=45367&c=1, what the judge actually said was:

The meaning complained of is a narrow one, confined on the face of it to highlighting what the claimant alleges is a purely factual error - i.e. that he had lost 54 professional matches on the trot (and these were the only professional matches he had played) rather than 54 professional matches on the trot when playing on the international tennis circuit...

"It seems to me, despite the way the matter has been pleaded, that the real complaint here is one of ridicule: that is, not merely of incompetence or lack of skill, but that the claimant was made to look absurdly bad at tennis...

She said that a "reasonable and sensible reader" would not think the suggestion he was the "the worlds worst" tennis player was a "free standing and objectively verifiable allegation independent of his record of losses in the 54 matches played all around the world".

She said: In my view it is clear that it is being said, that the claimant was the worlds worst, in the sense that he had the world record for the longest losing streak of 54 matches on the international professional tennis circuit.

That all seems eminently sensible, especially the final paragraph.

He'll probablt sue them for the new story on the grounds that he is now only the world's 2nd worst!

I just took a look at his website. Two things in the main struck me. Firstly how unusual it is for someone of his rank to have their own website... but maybe he dabbles in website creation and runs it himself, in which case fair enough you might expect to see lower ranked players with some net expertise making their own sites.

Secondly, and this is what really stood out, you guys know what I'm talking about, on the actual homepage the first thing you see is a very lengthy sidebar with the title "Apologies & Corrections" very prominently displayed. The other things that you'd expect to find on a players website such as News, Results etc etc are in a small header bar and a collection of small boxes, much more inconspicuous. I myself don't want to get into the discussion about the man's personality, but really, a tennis player's website ought to display most prominently tennis related things! Such as results, tournament schedule, perhaps a training blog, that kind of thing... I just think it says something that the "Apologies & Corrections" features so very highly... demonstrates a greater concern with that than the tennis.

Perhaps he could start doing something like LEARNING HOW TO PLAY BETTER. Yeah, woohoo he does quite well in Spanish club tournaments or whatever. Somehow this doesn't translate to the tour.

Therefore, casual fans will think he's rubbish because he lost 54 matches in a row, DESPITE the wins at whatever level it was.

Should he try to sue again, I think he'd be wasting his time and money, Time and money that could be better spent on LEARNING HOW TO PLAY TENNIS.

Ithankyou.

There is a segment on the esteemed Mr Dee at the end of the most recent edition of radio 4's news quiz, available on iplayer.

And now an appearance on the odd one out round on Have I Got News For You. BBC are clearly not bitter about paying him off...

What amazed me was that Paul and Ian both knew exactly who he was, though Paul thought he was called Roger - no Paul, that's Mr Federer! smile.gif

Given their means of employment, I'd imagine that they listened to the news quiz last week.

...or given the answer before the show started.

When I was living in England I quite liked HIGNFY but it seems pretty orchestrated to me.

I call for an eliminating match between Diego and Dee! Two legends! This would be epic!

Looks like there are quite a few 10Ks in Mexico in the coming weeks. I'm hoping that Beltranena will meet Ricardo Perez and then one of them will get a first win. Immovable Object versus Unstoppable Force etc. etc.
