Week 5 - ATP (462k+H) - Vina del Mar, CHI (red clay)

QR1: Jamie Murray UNR v (q1) Marcel Granollers-Pujol (ESP) WR 131 - 1st on Court 2 at 10.00 CHI / 13.00 GMT

QR1: (q7) Jamie Baker WR 217 v Borja Malo (CHI) WR 890 - 3rd on Court 1 at about 14.00 CHI / 17.00 GMT

Should be on live scores on the ATP site. QR2 to be played on Saturday as well after 14.00 CHI / 17.00 GMT.

No sign of Boggo in qualifying and it has been confirmed that Andy will not be playing in the main draw here either despite (apparently) having been offered a WC.

Btw, Andy has played Jamie's opponent three times:

- beat him 7-6(9) 6-3 in Vigo in August 2004 (Future)
- lost to him 6-4 6-1 in Ettlingen in May 2005 (Challenger qualifying)
- beat him 4-6 6-4 6-2 in Barcelona in April 2006 (ATP)

Interesting: Jamie Murray's down as last direct acceptance, based on his doubles ranking!?? I didn't realise that doubles rankings counted for anything in singles acceptance lists - anyone know anything about it, or can point to the place in the rulebook? is doubles WR 36 better than singles WR1000??

Maybe it was between him and another none ranked singles player, but seeing as Jamie had a high doubles ranking they him in?

(getting really tennis- geeky here, but) My reading of the rules is that in that case they should allocate Jamie a Wildcard, rather than a DA.

Livescore (I've had to guess the link, since the ATP seem to have forgotten that there are any tournaments on next week, but it seems to work) is at http://www.protennislive.com/frameset.asp?year=2008&wkno=5=en&tabno=3&eventid=0505 - of course, there's no guarantee they will actually livescore qualifying, we can but hope!

Good luck to both. Jamie B has a pretty good first round match so hopefully he can make some headway - what's his record on clay like in the past?

Jamie M, it's nice (if somewhat strange) to see him having a go at the singles side but I can't see anything other than a straight sets loss for him. The main reason he's never made it at singles is his groundstrokes and they're more important on clay than any other surface cry.gif

Is there any chance that Boggo has been given the wildcard Andy turned down? (though quite why Bogg would be given a wildcard into this tournament is beyond me) Just throwing the idea out there smile.gif

No, what they did is correct. On p 76 of the ATP rulebook http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/ATP_Rulebook2008.pdf, it says:

B. Singles Qualifying
1) Direct Acceptances shall first be selected from the players who sign in with the highest position on the most recent SAA ATP Ranking (Singles) List, including any Entry Protection.
2) If there are still places available for Direct Acceptances in the qualifying draw, the next players selected shall be those with the highest position on the most recent Stanford ATP Doubles Ranking List.
3) (then goes onto WCs)

Jamie B on clay

He played Florianopolis last year, losing 2 & 3 to an Argentine player who is now in the low 100s, Naples (USA) in 2006, beating an unranked player 1 & 1 then losing 6 & 0 to Kevin Kim, lost 3 & 6 to Bubka in the Ukraine DC tie.

Before that, he won a close match against Morgan Phillips on clay in a UK Future in 2004 before losing to Prpic and has reached two Futures semis on clay (in Turkey & the US) plus a few R1 losses in Futures & Futures qualifying on clay before that.

Btw did you know that Jamie got double bagelled in his first senior match (by David Sherwood) then double bagelled his (Syrian) opponent in his second.

"Andy's" WC

The local paper (http://diario.elmercurio.com/2008/01/25/deportes/tenis/noticias/7DF89AEC-ECE5-4873-970F-59AC6B8E98EE.htm?id=) says

"Sin embargo, el mánager del isleño, el chileno Patricio Apey, destrozó cualquier esperanza. "Definitivamente, Andy no jugará en Viña. Tuvimos una muy buena conversación con la gente del torneo, pero decidimos que no jugara. Y no es por razones económicas", precisó."

... and then goes on to say ...

"La noticia le vino bien a Adrián García (187°), quien, vía wild card, aseguró su presencia en el main draw, donde también podrían entrar, en última instancia, Jorge Aguilar (416°), Guillermo Hormazábal (550°) o Hans Podlipinik (808°)."

Or in other words, that's good news for Adrian Garcia who gets the 4th WC now that Muzza has pulled out. Pity, but it's clear fro mthe rest of that article that it was only to have the name Andy Murray in the tournament that they were willing to give out a WC for.

thanks, for both bits of information. That they were only willing to give the wildcard out for a big name is hardly surprising. Most tournaments are like that, and fair enough if we're honest.
