One of the tennis writes (quite possibly Neil Harman in the Times) voiced the opinion that what GB needed more than Andy going deep into a slam was a British woman joining him in the second week of a slam.
Well, Tennis Australia how have a story that the LTA would die for - Casey Dellacqua, WR 78, who they were saying at the draw hadn't ever got past R1 of the AO and had only ever won one grand slam match, not only got to the 3rd round and a match with Amélie Mauresmo, she actually managed to beat her! Cue entourage in tears, etc.
Imagine the fuss if one of our girls managed to break into the top 100 and went on to make the second week of Wimbledon ...

didnt elena put a good run here a few yeras back, didnt really have much effect tho.
tennis wont inspire youngsters unless it is given much better coverage by the press, and not so derisory at that.
why players like boggo and baker and all the rest are slammed when they are on a world scale pretty good, compared to footballers who on a world scale are avergae are treated like demi gods.

Yes, that's all true. I still bet the LTA would love it though. LOL
Of course, the biggest problem about fluke runs in slams is that if the player doesn't build on it and move up the rankings a lot more, they just plummet again a year later when the points come off.

Garbage. What we need is British Women AND Men playing on he main tour regularly. A fluke run at a slam isn't going to have a major effect on tennis.
I'm quite pleased you've said that. Granted Elena got a little more attention after her third round run at the Aus Open and obviously after her third round appearance at Wimby, but that means naught if it's not backed up (although in Elena's defence, we all know what she's been through but the generalisation still stands).
I struggle to find a lot of news on British tennis players in some papers. Perhaps I should start reading the Times more to guarantee it. Tennis will always remain second fiddle to football though, God help us all
I'm quite confident for 2008. If Naomi can stay healthy she, in my opinion will break the top 100 this year. Can Katie, Anne and Bally follow her in? I'm sure they can. And Mel wont be too far behind.
