And if he sooks up enough to the ATP and does their promotional stuff and licks their boots, he might even get his lost 75 back too.

Although, I don't know, ever since he lost them, he has been inspired !

As things stand, though, he is on at least 2265 points after Olympic week even if he does nothing at the Olympics, and that will clearly be his best ever points total.

Thanks Madeline - that was a very good way of explaining it.

I just done a quick set of sums after posting my first reply and realised the 200 point loss this week and it all clicked into place wink

Ranking Points 2008
The ITF is pleased to confirm that, thanks to the co-operation of the ATP and WTA, the Tennis Event at the 2008 Olympics will carry ranking points for both men and women.

The points will be awarded as follows:

Men's ATP ranking points

Gold Medal - 400
Silver Medal - 280
Bronze Medal - 205
Loser 3rd/4th - 155
Quarterfinals - 100
Round of 16 - 50
Round of 32 - 25
1st Round - 5

Women's WTA ranking points

Gold Medal - 353
Silver Medal - 245
Bronze Medal - 175
Loser 3rd/4th - 135
Quarterfinals - 90
Round of 16 - 48
Round of 32 - 28
1st Round - 1

Possibly not, but as Andy is playing in the Olympics and no other Brits are (except Jamie in the doubles) we may as well leave it here. Points won affect the ranking I suppose.

There are ranking points at the Olympics as goldfish showed. As the Olympic event will just count as an optional, and Andy's 5th optional after the Olympic week would be 120 then he would need to reach the semi finals for it to have any impact on his ranking total at that time.

However, even say a quarter final could help in the race and in his ranking points at a later date ( once some optionals drop off ).

Andy is safe to remain at #6 this week despite his first-round loss. The nearest person is Nalbandian, and even if he wins Gold he will still be 90 points behind Andy.

A question asked on another forum, about what it would take for Andy to jump to #4 at the USO, had me investigating.

Ferrer at #4 is defending 450 points; when they come off his total (before adding any USO points) will be 2415

Davydenko at #5 is also defending 450 points; when they come off his total will be 2250

Andy is only defending 75; when they come off his total will be 2340.

So, at the start of the tournament, Andy is up to #5, 90 points ahead of Davydenko and only 75 behind Ferrer. It is possible.

Of course, there is also the problem of people behind having a good run. The nearest is Nalbandian, who after deducting points to defend will be on 1900, so if Andy avoids an early exit he should be at any rate reasonably safe at not going down in the rankings.

I don't think it's make any different his ranking is #4 or 5. Even he become no. 1 without winning any Grand Slam. He will not feel good. He need to win a slam

It makes a huge difference if he is ranked 4 or 5!

If he's ranked 5, he could have to face one of Federer, Djokovic or Nadal in the QF's of the big events.

If he's ranked 4, he can't face any of them until the semi finals, which means he should go a round further in all the big tournaments
