Looks like the Scud is retiring too so who was the greater, Tim or Scud
Philippoussis led 4-3 on head-to-heads, including wins in the 98 US Open and Wimbledon 2000 but Tim won the last two, in the final of Adelaide 2002 and at Wimbledon 04
Both won 11 career titles, Henman won 1 masters series as did Philippoussis.
Philippousis made the final at Wimbledon and US Open (98) but never made it past rd4 at the French while Tim made the semis there....Tim also made 4 Wimbledon semis and at least the quarters from 96-99 and 2001-2004 while Philippoussis only made it past the quarters once (2003)
Henman was in the world's top 20 from 1996-2004 while Philippousis drifted in and out. Henman finished the year in the top 10 4 times while Philippousis did so only once.
Henman had a career high of no 4, Philippousis no 8
Of all tyrannies a tyranny exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive.... those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience
I will say this for Scud he had an amazing 1998. That win against Henman was mighty close and who knows, if Henman had won it maybe he would have made the final of the US Open. Henman looked after himself better and made more of his more limited gifts as a result and so I say Henman, although as I said, Scud for a while looked like he'd win a major or two.
