This has been said a couple of times in different places. I'm not as familiar with the men's game, but in what way is the women's entry system more complicated than the men's? As far as I'm aware at 15k and 25k level the entry system for men and women is the same. For Challenger/60K to 100K it remains the same as previous years for the women except for a reduced qualifying draw size while for the men it has been completely revamped with reserved places for ITF ranked players in both the main draw and qualifying.

I don't think the addict is necessarily implying the women's entry system is more complicated then the men's... but one look at the W25 entry list for Playford immediately tells one that the new system is messy and frankly unintelligible. Even as a WTA ranked player on the alt list it's hard to calculate your chances of getting in, and it's clear that some currently much lower ranked ITF players will get into tournaments ahead of higher ranked WTA players. Who knows whether the ranking system will sort itself out after a while, so there is some semblance of ranking order again in the future, but it certainly doesn't exist at the outset, and I would think that entry list system will have to be modified subsequently so that especially the players can understand it a little more clearly. It is not just Tara that is going to be confused as to understanding a) quite how their entry ranking as ended up like it is. and b) how to make their entry decisions.

In addition, those players left in limbo with WTA ranking points but not the three qualifying tournaments do indeed seem to have just been left on the outside looking in with no status anywhere.

Michael, you have explained it perfectly. There are five sections on the acceptance lists now, rather than three, and some players with WTA rankings appear on two alternate lists. It will probably become a lot clearer once we get into the new season, and more tournaments take place with the entries spread out.

My post initially was meant as a quick reference link to the relevant pages in the new rulebook.

It is basically:

17 accepted on WTA

5 accepted on ITF

Qualifying list based on WTA - 8 places

Reserves for WTA quali list

Reserves for ITF acceptance list

(with - presumably - just two wildcards for the MD to make up the 32?)

Not quite. This is how the women's entries shape up: -

For the 25k's:
Max 17 for WTA, with 2 SE's and 1 JE available
Only 6 qualifiers into main draw
5 ITF reserved places in main draw
4 Wild cards

Only 24 in qualifying, including 4 wild cards at 25k level and above, and 5 at 15k level
24 maximum entries in qualifying at all ITF tournaments from 15k to 100k

That seems about it CD. I don't know why they've reduced the numbers of qualifiers to 24, that seems retrogressive and unnecessarily restrictive in terms of denying 8 players an opportunity per tournament.

At the moment what perhaps makes the entry lists so hard to read is having the list of ITF reserved alternates immediately after the list of WTA qualifiers, since one then has scroll down beyond what may be a lengthy list of ITF reserved alternates to get to the list of 'real' qualifying alternates. That list should follow on directly from the qualifiers list, and stick the ITF reserved alternates at the end.

The changes to qualifying draw size and match format are part of the plan to reduce tournaments to 7 days. Some tournaments will hold both qualifying rounds on Monday.

I agree with you that the ITF reserved list is in a not very helpful position.

Just reading through the threads, it appears the points breakdown for ITF has changed. I am sure you are all aware of this and in my more sporadic appearances here, I have probably missed the details somewhere.

Might be useful to update in this thread. I would do it myself, but I have just checked the ATP website and the ITF website but it appears they haven't been updated. I list here of the new points breakdown would be appreciated.

Yes, I do see that even the ATP website still has the old futures points. That's poor.

From the ATP 2022 rulebook ( and in practice ) :
25K/25K+H : 1, 3, 8, 16, 25
15K/15K+H : 1, 2, 4, 8, 15
