Week 40: WTA Tier 3 - Japan Open

Bally returns to action for the first time since the US Open, and is also down for a 25K event in Japan 2 weeks later. However she has a tough opener in the first round of qualies against a former top 100 player. Sarah also plays here before joining Anne in Australia for a series of 25Ks. Both are on first up in the early hours UK time.

Agnes SZATMARI (ROU) vs Remi TEZUKA (JPN)
Hatsumi HAMAMURA (JPN) vs Kelly LIGGAN (IRL)
Kanae HISAMI (JPN) vs (5) Tiantian SUN (CHN)

(3) Meng YUAN (CHN) vs Ye-Ra LEE (KOR)
(WC) Tomoko SUGANO (JPN) vs (WC) Yuka KURODA (JPN)
Chiaki OKADUE (JPN) vs Sarah BORWELL (GBR)
Akiko YONEMURA (JPN) vs (8) Shiho HISAMATSU (JPN)

Excellent win for Bally, particularly as Salerni has in fact slipped back into the top 100, as a result of reaching the QF in Beijing last week. I think that makes it her best ranking win outside the UK since the 2005 Australian Open. Her good wins often come in clusters........

Sarah plays 8th seed Hisamatsu in the second qualifying round tomorrow

Is there 3 qualies rounds?

Where's Cavaday this week!

I'm loving seeing the GB tennis girls giving these slightly weaker WTA's a go! I think if you set your sights higher it can often help you make a break!

Wow @ Bally jawdrop.gifclap.gifclap.gif Brilliant result, she'd taken a month out training after the USO btw. It's a hugely impressive result as Salerni is up to a career high of 92 at the moment after two challenger titles plus a run to the semis of a tier 2 this year. It's almost certainly Elena's best win since the 2005 Aussie Open which was the last time she qualified for a WTA outside of Britain.

On this form she has a great shot of making the main draw. Tomorrow she plays Romania's Agnes Szatmari who's ranked a few places higher at 235. Her best results this year have come on clay so Bally should be the favourite on fast outdoor hard

It's been some year for Elena who was ranked down in the 800s when she returned to the tour in March after 9 months out but she's now back inside the top 250. If she's top 200 by end of the season...an AO qualies place will be secured and she'll have jumped 600 places in about 7 months !

Good to see Sarah in this WTAs...hasn't had much reward for her efforts in past few weeks...but hopefully she'll have found some quality physios at least ! Much tougher task for her tomorrow against 8th seed Hisamatsu who's ranked 201 and has had a consistent year with 6 challenger quarters in 50Ks and 75Ks. I reckon Sarah has a decent chance especially on a fast surface. Meng Yuan is the other seed in her section which doesn't look good but who knows

Both girls are 3rd on court tomorrow...I guess around 6am
