Week 37 - ATP Bejing

Even though Boggo sadly had to withdraw with injury, there is still British interest in this event

Gregory Howe took part in the qualifying event, but lost to the 8th seed Hyun-Woo Nam of Korea 63 62

Bootie and Hutchins are involved in the doubles draw, and are the 3rd seeds

(3) Buturac/Hutchins vs. Garcia/Gonzalez (CHI)

Disappointing not to see any more Brits in the qualies, although it may be a long way to go to play 1 match. Still, would have liked to have seen Lee Childs or James Auckland have a go here, as they would have been seeded. Auckland not in the doubles either, which means he should be playing one of the challengers then

Intersting that Howe's gone out there: is he coaching someone there?

Well given that he lost first round of qualies and has won only a handful of matches in his career, I doubt he'll be coaching anyone biggrin.gif Probably just fancied taking advantage of the ATP perks like free massages etc

Booty and Hutch should go deep here. Gonzalez is the world no 7 and made the Aussie Open final this year, he used to be top 30 in doubles and won an Olympic gold medal with Nicholas Massu in Athens 2004 but he doesn't play it much any more and has slipped to 146. Garcia is just inside the top 200 doubles, won a challenger in Brazil at the start of 2007 but hasn't done much since.

Wonder why Aucks is not playing here, after his success in Mumbai last yr thought he'd be doing these Asian ATPs.....pretty sure that Childs is injured unfortunately. Guess that Bloomers or Baker could have played here and done Bejing, Bangkok and Tokyo but Bloomers prefers the faster European indoor stuff and similar with Baker, the US hard suits him better.

Hmm, not sure a £500+ air fare to Beijing equates to a "free" massage confused.gif

I thought Howe was a coach who's been doing a bit of Futures qualies on the side?

lol true biggrin.gif maybe he was able to stow away somehow in the back of a plane or hide for days in a Bejing-bound sushi truck to avoid the fare

You're getting mixed up with Richard Brooks who coaches Jankovic

hmm.gif possibly - but Howe is 36 years old - I seem to remember a thread from when he first appeared on the radar (one of the Spanish Qualies?)

I don't think so, Howe plays mainly in Africa.....its Brooks who does the Spanish qualies

- just checked his ITF record: he's been playing futures and satellites qualies since 1993 jawdrop.gif, but it looks like Tunisia F1 in June was his first rankings point.

Really looks like it's come together for him this last year: he was the losing finalist at the British Seniors championship at Wimbly this year too!!

Booty and Hutch are just playing this tourney together, not teaming up for Bangkok and Bejing....Booty plays those with Todd Perry (Aus). Booty & Stretch are considering playing the indoor events together, nothing decided upon yet....Booty told me this last night but the press said last week that Jamie would play the indoors with Aussie Jordan Kerr (they did well together in challengers last autumn).

Great result for ross, must have felt he was living the dream abit playing against gonzo, this result should have ross back into the top100 biggrin Great chance to make the semis and a chance to make the final beacause i have a feeling the top seeds might have to pull out because bopanna retired from his singles earlier on today so looks like he's injured.
