spoke to Slabba this evening, he said he's got an SE into this tourney and is heading out there tomorrow
It's on outdoor hard, got another 3 weeks or so before the indoor futures really start
He's entered another 15K+H in France the week after this one but will only play that if he goes deep in this one (by that he means quarters or further)....if he goes out in rd1 or rd2, he'll head back to Sutton for a week and a half of training before the Nottingham 15K
It's a pretty good rd1 draw for a 15K+H. Audouy is a veteran at 32 and is ranked 610, has never been higher than the low 400s. This is his first tournament after a month out with injuries. His best results this year have come on clay, making a 10K semi in Poland and a few quarters around Europe. He did quite well on the grass in July, beating both Jim May and David Brewer.
Shame that if Alex gets through he's likely to play Jeanpierre but the Frenchman hasn't won many matches recently so who knows
Alex lost a marathon encounter lasting nearly 4 hours. Both players served excellently, Alex making 90% 1st serves and Audouy making 88%. However, both players struggled to hold with 13 breaks overall. Alex took all 3 of his chances to edge a tight opening set which took over 2 hours, however he wasn't able to take his chances in the second, converting only 2/7 bps while Audouy took 3/4. In the decider, Alex faded , the first serve % dropping and Audouy broke 3 times to reach the next round.
I doubt he'll play F13 over there next week...next tourneys are likely to be the back to back 15Ks in Nottingham, still outdoors though, Alex's fav surface
Special exemption....if you've entered a futures but haven't made the main draw cut and would have to play qualifying....and then the week before you reach the semis of another futures, meaning that you can't play qualifying...you get a SE into the main draw.
The two tourneys have to be at the same level though, so you can't get an SE into an ATP after doing well at a challenger for instance
Just spoke to Alex, he is really p*ssed off atm cause at 6-3, *4-5, serving to stay in the 2nd set, he got injured. He was hitting a backhand, and caught his knee with the racket on the follow-through making it bleed and causing the kneecap to become swollen so he couldn't really move much at all. He had no chance then as Audouy just moved him around the court and won the next 7 games. Seriously frustrating as he was close to winning, had had the better chances in the 2nd set.
The courts are really, really slow there, which was why the match lasted so long. Even more annoying is that the top seed Jeanpierre has just lost to a qualifier so Alex would have had a great chance to go deep
