The US Open has been a poor hunting ground for British women in recent years. It is three years since anyone won a match, six years since 2 players advanced to the second round, and ten years since a qualifier (Sam Smith). We should have a big contingent trying to change this pattern, with the following win-loss records in US Open qualies:
Anne Keothavong 2-2 Elena Baltacha 1-4 Katie O'Brien 0-1 Mel South 0-1 Naomi Cavaday 0-0
Anne and Naomi should have their confidence boosted by a large number of wins on the surface this year.
Bally has a poor record in the US, but the same could have been said of Australian Rebound Ace before she qualified and reached the third round in the 2005 Australian Open.
Katie has struggled to adjust to her elevated ranking, but it should give her a low seeding, which will improve her chances of a favourable draw.
Mel will need to play above her level to net her first win in Grand Slam qualifiers (she is currently 0-6), as i think her only wins this year aginst players inside the top 250 (expected cut) are on grass.
The qualies are scheduled to take place from Tuesday to Friday, with the draw made on Monday
Katie O'Brien will be the 30th seed Doesn't have a great record in slam qualies so far, hopefully that'll change here
In 2003, Anne made the final qualies round losing a close 2 setter to Canada's Maureen Drake....apart from that no Brit woman has got that far in New York since Sam Smith in 1998.
All 5 could certainly qualify with the right draw, after those performances in New Haven and the success she had on US hard earlier in the year, Naomi looks the most likely to do so....one of the key questions could be how well her fitness stands up to the New York humidity, though she has been working very hard on that since Wimbledon
Anne's not been able to get the results in this tourney last few yrs but this is the only slam where she's made final qualies round so it's her best chance of qualifying
It's surprising how Bally hasn't done so well in the US, tis rather puzzling

Anne, Mel and Bally have tough first round opponents, but if they want to make an impact at slam level they'll need to be able to beat women like these and tougher ladies. At least neither Zahlova, Rodina or Makarova are 15/16 year tennis prodigies as they can be some of the worst draws. Rodina was a talented junior of a few years back but hasn't quite transitioned to the tour - I believe Amanda Keen beat her earlier this year.
