Player of the month is back after several months !!! It'll be the July one next weekend but first we need the one for June
Nominees:
(1) Katie O'Brien: It was quite a month for the 21 year old from Yorkshire who became British no 1 and reached a new career high. She made the quarters of Surbiton and then beat two top 70 players at Eastbourne, qualifying and then going on to reach rd2, giving Dementieva a close match. Also won her first grand slam match at Wimbledon
(2) Mel South: Reached Surbiton quarters, knocking out the top seed and world no 85 Brianti in straight sets. At Eastbourne she stunned former top 10 player Alicia Molik in 3 sets before falling to Wimbledon runner-up Bartoli. She also won the Surbiton doubles title
(3) Naomi Cavaday: Knocked out world no 70 Bardina for the loss of just 3 games in Eastbourne and then came within a point of beating Hingis at Wimbledon. Reached Surbiton doubles final with Bally
(4) Bally: Qualified for Eastbourne and won a round before losing to Vaidisova. Took a set off top 20 player Srebotnik at Wimbledon. Reached Surbiton doubles final with Naomi
(5) Anna Fitzpatrick: Reached the world's top 400, a new career high. Beat her first top 200 opponent in Wimbledon qualifying and made the semis of the girls singles.
For me it has to be Katie, I didn't think she had the game to beat top 75 players but I was very happy to be proved totally wrong. Those 3 weeks completely turned her season around. Hopefully she can continue that, qualify for the US Open and win a few rounds in some of those weak Tier 3 and Tier 4 WTAs in Asia in the autumn
Yeah got to be Katie. her run at eastboure was fantastic and she backed it up with her 1st win in senior wimbledon and has made herself the british #1 with great results.
