Week 30 - Challenger (M) - Lexington, USA

Jamie Baker is top seed in qualifying here, so a great chance for him to make the main draw

He has a bye in round 1, and is seeded to play Rubin Statham (NZL) in the final round, and he has a ranking of 662

Jamie should easily qualify here and pick up a couple of ranking points

Why on earth did he not enter originally?

Must be a change of plan, maybe he was planning to have a training week and changed his mind after going out in round 1 this week. (could be any number of things.)

Hopefully he does manage to qualify (he really really should!) and uses those extra matches on the surface and the extra couple of points to his advantage.

More likely he just forgot to sign-in on time, it does happen quite a lot, even at ATP level.

Nothing to defend here from last year (he lost in rd1 to Brendan Evans in 3 sets) and he must be in good form atm to take a set 6-1 against Okun.

Tournament website is pretty good. They give live score updates from the main draw:

Jamie Baker is no 1 seed in qualifying here.
He had a Bye for round 1 and then beat (5)Jason Jung (USA) 6-3 6-4 in round 2

Jamie is 1st match Ct 2 on Sunday vs Jose Statham (NZL) in qualifying round. - 10-.00 AM (15.00 BST)

Unusually all 8 seeded players are in final qualifying round.

A possible explanation, from the home page of the Lexington site:

July 21, 2007

Top-seeded Men's Qualifier Baker Passed Up RCA-Indy

by Jim Durham

If Jamie Baker of Great Britain had signed up by the deadline three weeks ago, he would have been the fourth seed for the $100,000 Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships starting Monday. But, that wouldn't have allowed him the option of playing in the RCA at Indianapolis - a
 prestigious U.S. Open Series event.

The No. 246 player in the world, Baker is now glad he decided instead three days ago to play the Lexington Challenger, July 23-29 even though that meant he first had to get through two qualifying rounds at the University of Kentucky's Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. "I'm fine with that, as I wanted more court time than I'd probably have gotten at Indy," the qualifier's top seed said after Saturday's solid 6-3, 6-4 win over Jason Jung. "This is definitely better than just hitting the practice courts."

Jamie Baker def. Jose Statham (NZL) 6-4 7-6 and qualifies. smile.gif

Not as straight forward as predicted but he made it to main draw.

That's great news. A bit more cash, a couple of extra points and hopefully a lot of confidence to propel him deep into this one.

Turned out to be quite a smart decision, he'll still be seeded 4th in the main draw but now he's got some extra pts and match practise on the courts. A bit surprised that the Statham match was that close but Jamie didn't need to be in top gear for that one.

He'd probably have been seeded high in Indy qualies but could have got one of the top guys early in the main draw and that would've been that....better chance to try and rack up some pts here. The ATPs can wait biggrin.gif

Jamie should really make the QF's here, as he shouldn't have too much trouble with his first two opponents, especially seeing as he has had 2 matches on the courts already.

Ross Hutchins appears in the doubles draw here as 2nd seeds with Phillip Simmons. In round 1 they take on WC's Chris Lam and Chris Wettengel

Jamie plays rd1 on Tuesday.

First opponent Terachi is ranked 383 (best of 219), qualified for Aptos last week but lost in rd1. Mainly played futures this year, made two finals in Japan last month. Could be tricky but Jamie should win

Looking ahead to rd2: Jamie's got a 1-1 head-to-head v Simmonds and 1-0 v der Merwe, all have been really close matches.

Shame he's got Reynolds in his quarter who made the Aptos final cry.gif
