Week 19 - Women ITF 50K - Japan (Fukuoka)

Katie O'B Mel S and Natasha K all in MD

R1
(5)Katie O'Brien (GBR) v Mari Tanaka (JPN)
(7)Melanie South (GBR) v Chiaki Okadaue (JPN)
Nataska Khan (GBR) v Yuka Kuroda (JPN)

Here's hoping for a change in Mel's fortunes. Katie is defending serious points from here last year.

Good job Katie did so well in Gifu then.

I hope Mel wins at least one match here smile.gif

Katie has Chan in her section again this week.

She should make the QF and defend most of her points.

Mel really has a decent draw even by her results. Hoping for her to make the QF here.

It's an excellent series of results in tough conditions, it's been raining non-stop over there for the past few days and so they've had to practise indoors but play took place outside today and it was really windy.

Mel and Katie's rd2 opponents are unknown at the moment but Natasha will face Aussie 2nd seed Casey Dell'Acqua, who's ranked 121 and will be the highest ranked opponent Natasha has faced to date, so it'll be an excellent experience for her. Dell'Acqua has reached four 25K finals this year !

I'm so pleased for Mel, she must feel so good to end that 5 match losing streak which went back to Feb. Hopefully with that off her back she can get back to her best...should be able to make the quarters here.

Katie's really unlucky to get Chan again in her quarter cry.gif However, at least it looks like she will make quarters which is the big thing this week with those pts to defend

Yeah potentially two back to back 50K QFs is rather good. She wasn't completely outclassed by Chan last week so maybe she can push her harder this week? Here's hoping she can spring a surprise and cement her place as GB no 1 biggrin.gif

Shes already lost that to Anne. Anne will move back up to around 165 after her 1st round win this week.

I think Katie will have to win the event to catch up.

O'Brien bt E.Sema 6-0 4-6 7-6(8)
Mel won 6-4 7-5
Khan lost Dell'Acqua 6-3 6-4.

Mel slowly getting back to form, may she worried about the grass court because she knows shes got points to defend at Wimbledon! Kahn put in a respectable performance smile.gif Mel plays Khan's conquerer in the QF, while O'Brien plays Chan, but not sure about because i think Chan might have pulled out confused.gif

Great to see Mel having a couple of wins.

I really hope Chan has pulled out! Katie is improving slowly and is still young. Could be one to watch at Wimbledon!

Alas

Yung-Jan CHAN (TPE) (1) defeated Katie O'BRIEN (GBR) (5) 63 61

Casey DELL'ACQUA (AUS) (2) defeated Melanie SOUTH (GBR) (7) 62 61

Neither very close. Katie had the very tough top 100 opponent again, and will be glad not to see her in the next tournament
