Short BBC report....

Clijsters ends her tennis career

Clijsters has finished with 34 career titlesFormer world number one Kim Clijsters has announced her immediate retirement from tennis. The Belgian world number four has ended her career with immediate effect, according to her personal Web site. The popular 23-year-old right-hander won the US Open in 2005 and was a Wimbledon semi-finalist in both 2003 and 2006. She was also runner-up at the French open in 2001 and 2003 and a losing finalist at the 2004 Australian Open.

"It has been more than great but now the rackets will be hung up," Clijsters told her web diary.

I always liked Clijsters so I'm sad to see her go, would've liked her to have a final swansong at Wimbledon. cry.gif She really has had problems with injuries though so I guess sensible to call it a day, especially if the funs gone out of playing.

It's her life and her wish, but come on! Why would anyone want to retire from something at 23??? I won't even get a job at 23!!

I am strictly against the concept of 'retiring at your prime' which most sportspeople of today follow. There is no age for giving up. As long as you are good at something you should continue doing it. I admire people like Peter Shilton and Jimmy Connors for their courage and appetite.

If Sampras came back he would possibly still be able to win a round or two at Wimbly.

Sad day, but some women really want to settle down and have a few kids....I wouldn't hold that against anyone. I will really miss her, always been a fan. She signed my son's t.shirt at Indian Wells in 2005. I saw her walking across the grass on her own to go practice and she was very nice to him. I just hope that she does not regret leaving the game so early in the future, although she really seems to have had enough of the injuries, traveling etc.

As for Sampras Panda, if the grass at Wimbledon was like it was in the 90s maybe he could still get to the quarters, that man was a machine on grass. I so miss those S&V days at Wimbledon and watching Sampras was always a treat.
