Sarah Borwell will be top seed in the main draw so fantastic chance for her to really rack up the points !
Bally's in qualies.
(5)Elena Baltacha (GBR) v Kyung-Hwa Lee (KOR) Ji-Sun Kim (KOR) v Soo-Min Kim (KOR) Shiori Araki (JPN) v Yoon-Young Jeong (KOR) (16)Cho-Won Lee (KOR) v Joohyoung Kim (KOR)
Should be another easy win for Elena in rd2...her opponent is 20, ranked 1419 and this is her first tournament since last June. Nice easy way for Elena to get used to the conditions in Incheon !
Shes not using her PR here-I think she gambled the qualies would be weak.
Elena is currently ranked 822, with 10 Ranking points. She is has only 2 points to defend the rest of this year (RG qualies).
If she wins her final qualie match, she will back in the top 800. I expect fairly rapid progress up to 600 (currently 20 ranking points) and then top 500 (30 RP). Then the curve is steeper, but she is easily good enough to come back to the top 250, injury allowing.
Elena's PR is something like 226, she's probably saving it for Surbiton and the other grass 25Ks plus of course RG qualies
She qualified with an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 win over Korean 16th seed Cho-Won Lee. Cho is only ranked 1178 and this was her first tourney since last June so it was an easy match.
However.....
Rd1: Ji-Young Kim (Kor)(wc) bt Sarah Borwell (GB)(1) 3-6, 6-2, 6-2
To be blunt, wtf happened there !!!! Kim is ranked 774, age 20 and lost her last match in 3 sets to an unranked Malaysian player, she hasn't made even quarters of a 10K since May 2006 ! Sarah must be livid with herself for this massive missed opportunity
Lets hope Bally can make up for things and go deep, no one in this field who she can't beat.
She plays wc Jeong-A Cho in rd1. Cho's ranked 771, hasn't played that much in the last year though in March she qualified and won a round in a 25K in Mumbai
She meets 8th seed Ayu-Fani Damayanti of Indonesia in rd2 who is ranked 360 so this will be a much tougher prospect than the previous round. Damayanti made the semis of 25K Kalgoorlie in March, but that has been her 2007 highlight so far. In November, she reached two consecutive finals in 10K Jakarta and 25K Jakarta.
Bally should be able to win this one...her opponent's only ranked 360. This is such a weak 25K, really great chance for her to make the latter stages and boost her ranking big-time...at her best she's a class above anyone in this field
