Shame as courts in Gifu are really, really fast, would suit Georgie's game....it's astroturf stuff and has lots of sand...is pretty slippy so suits the girls with big serves. Think Natasha Khan could have a big week here if she hits form, should suit her v well
how many more pts does Tash need to make top 400 ? I hope she gets some wc opportunities in June...Surbiton and the WTA qualies, her big game should suit the grass
I hope the 3 week training break has helped Mel get some confidence back, although Natasha's one of my fav players I'm kinda rooting for Mel to win here, she needs to start getting some pts with so much to defend in June and July.
From Natasha's perspective, it's a great chance for an upset, she knows she can beat players at this level...she hammered Errani (160ish) 1 and 2 last autumn and she had another good scalp in Germany earlier this year. She's played Mel twice before, both times in 2005. Mel won 6-4, 7-5 outdoors and then 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 indoors so it's always been close between them
i think itf should pay players who come against from own country when they come from far away. wat a waste of money for person who loses out of tasha and mel
What a waste of money for anyone who loses first round having travelled a long way? They are representing themselves first and foremost, the country they come from should have no bearing. What if the tournament is in Korea and there is a FRA v GER GBR v SWE and GBR v POR. Should they pay the losers of all of those matches as they have travelled a long way?

It's been raining a lot in Gifu, making the astro even faster. Mel and Natasha both have good serves so breaks are gonna be few and far between...could come down to one or two pts
