Federer takes pop at ATP

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal stood together to complain about the pace of proposed changes to the structure of men's professional tennis on Monday.

The world number one and two criticised officials for rushing ahead with plans to cut the number of Masters Series events without listening to players.

"This is a scream for help," said Federer. "These decisions need to be taken more slowly, we want a say.

"We're the ones out there on court in the tennis shorts, they're not."

The 2009 schedule is set to be published and is thought to included cutting the nine-event Masters Series down to seven, with Monte Carlo and Hamburg likely to be downgraded.

Switzerland's Federer was among scores of players who recently signed a letter to the Association of Tennis Professionals, the game's governing body, complaining about the pace of change.

We don't want it to come to a situation where we say we don't want to play Ivan Ljubicic

"We need to speak with the bosses, things are going too fast," he said.

"I've had many meetings with ET [ATP boss Etienne de Villiers]. He listens but then goes and does things his way - I wish he would listen more.

"We've gone from (predecessor) Mark Miles doing nothing to ET doing too much."

World number three Nikolay Davydenko questions why none of the four North American Masters Series events are going to be touched in the planned shake-up.

And ATP Player Board president Ivan Ljubicic called for talks before the situation worsens.

"We don't want it to come to a situation where we say we don't want to play," said the Croatian.

"We don't have time to lose. People who will be putting on tournaments in 2009 still don't know what kind of a tournament they will have. It could soon be too late (for player input).

"We don't have much time, it's only a year and a half away."

but he does have a good point. if there are to be 7, why does NA get over half? They aren't half the world (I know they think they are the whole world)

i guess the americans look at europe as one country as such, so we have two slams in their eyes.

most of us heard ken comments and have had similar epxerinces with them at some stage.

Quite apart from retaining all the North American Masters Series events, it is also in my opinion pretty outrageous to cut 2 out of the 3 clay court Masters Series events.

I am personally not a huge lover of clay court tennis, but I do recognise that it is a very important part of the game and admire the gresat practitioners on that surface,

One Grand Slam and one Masters Series clay court event is just not good enough.

It is absolutely clear to me that it is only sensible and fair that if they cut to 7 Masters Series events, at least 2 clay court events must be retained and one of the North American events downgraded.

I guess though the authorities know best. How's Round Robin getting on ??!!!

Yes, change should always be considered but to me professional tennis is in a healthy state and not crying out for changes. If changes are intended then at least as Roger says they should be considered slowly and carefully wth all relevant parties given a say, not just those parties that say what the authorities want to hear.

yeah whilst i'm not a big fan of the dirt, its insane to want to basically downgrade the whole claycourt season!

to drop from 9 to 7, makes sense to drop hamburg and cincinnatti i reckon. and i'm sure most people would feel the same!

I don't think the idea is to cut out 2 of the 3 clay Masters, they are putting in a new one in Madrid, so they would only be cutting one. I don't see that a great problem, 3 Masters in so short a space of time seems rather overkill, and two would probably be better.

That would still mean cutting out two of the existing ones, however. I don't much care about Hamburg but losing Monte Carlo would be a shame, and it is usually a good indicator of who will win RG.

My main problem with these changes is, I agree with Fed et al: there are too many changes too quickly, without having thought things through properly.

I hate clay tennis.

I'd like to see Roland Garros downgraded to a Tour event and Hamburg to a Challenger. laughing.gif

But I agree with Fed's point that things are too dynamic in tennis these days. hmm.gif
