Tennis Australia could be poised to change the surface of the Australian Open from rubber to hard court, according to media reports.
The Age newspaper claim the switch could be made as early as 2008 in a quest to find a "national surface" for all levels of the game in Australia.
The Rebound Ace surface has been criticised - most outspokenly by Australian former world number one Lleyton Hewitt - for holding heat and being sticky underfoot, and for being slow and producing a high bounce.
The surface has been used at Melbourne Park since the Open moved there from Kooyong's grass in 1988, but has not gained universal acceptance in Australia because of its restrictive costs.
Several rival court suppliers are in competition to become the Open's new surface although a surface similar to the hard court of the United States Open is thought to be favoured.
There have previously been allegations that the surface causes injuries but this year I don't believe there were too many considering the time of year etc etc.
Personally I like the idea of all slams having a different surface therefore the true GS is difficult to achieve and truly is an amazing feat to conquer.
Will we have a second US Open in the early part of the year possibly as soon as next year?
true, but it gets bloody hot over there and they close the roof a lot anyway. it should be a faster usrafce then USO tho, so we have a distinct differnece. so the fastest, lowest bouncing, type of hard cour there is.

While we're being sacrilegious, shouldn't it be Wimbledon that goes indoors and Australia that goes to grass: That would ensure that the matches in London don't get rained off anymore .
Wimby must never change. And as to the weather, I seem to remember rain causing some havoc at the USO last year.
Anyway, Wimbledon is in the process of erecting a roof over Centre. At present there is no roof over spectators even, while building work proceeds, so I may have the joy of sitting on Centre on Day 1 with my umbrella up. . .
I think they should go back to grass too. I know it would never happen but there is just something about grass court tennis which is amazing to watch. Even over here, one of my fav tournys is Newport just because of the grass and Brits like Greg and Martin Lee coming over and doing well of course.

I wouldn't like another grass slam but just a longer grass court season. The end of june, whole of july and a bit of august would be fine with me
The Aussies could afford it though. As was said....they love it outside and spend mega $$$$$$ on sport. Over here tennis is no where near as big as down there and many tournys including Indian Wells have been or were fighting for their lives....if grass was to make a come back it would have to be there.....that is why I said it. Tennis on grass is the best which is why I love Wimbledon etc. You can't beat it.
