ATP Points In Davis Cup?

From The Times

March 24, 2007

Ranking points may be given in Davis Cup

Neil Harman, Tennis Correspondent in Miami, Florida

It will come too late to help Tim Henman’s cause but the prospect of ranking points being awarded for participation in the Davis Cup is the most profound change being considered to enhance the championship and sustain the support of the world’s leading players. Henman’s reacquaintance with the competition from which he retired two years ago will be confirmed when he joins the Great Britain squad — Andy Murray, Greg Rusedski, Jamie Murray, Jamie Baker and Richard Broomfield are the others — for the zonal tie against the Netherlands in Birmingham from April 6-8. And, to content British hearts, there were flashes during his first-round defeat by Guillermo Cañas, from Argentina, in the Sony Ericsson Open here when the clock had been rewound to Henman at his peak. Just imagine to where Henman might have climbed had ranking points for the cup been part of the package. As negotiations continue between the ITF, which owns the Davis Cup, and the ATP over prospective dates for the 2009 event — players want ties staged the week immediately after grand-slam tournaments rather than a week later — the most intriguing factor would be the approval of points for results.

I don't think it would be workable. What about guys who play in the lower reaches of the competition ie Euro/Africa Zone group 3 or something. Would they get the same amount of points for beating an unranked ghanian as someone who beats fed in world group?

If not, then it becomes unfair on them. Why should someone be handicapped against other players because they play for a country without another top player. Some players could find others getting a leap on them because they play in a higher division in Davis Cup.

Also, what about the lower ranked guys who play for countries in lower divisions. For example is it fair that Conor Niland gets chance to earn ranking points playing for Ireland, whilst his peers in the world ranking don't get this chance because there are many higher ranked players in their country?

Few things to think about before this becomes a reality.

You get points for taking part in the cups in junior tennis and out there you earn points according to the level you are playing - qualifying or main competitions.

I like the concept but it's a bit harsh to people like Baghdatis or Gulbis.

Well i dont think its a good idea. i mean what if Cox gets points for winning a rubber then he struggles for the rest of year and the points comes off! Also, its a team event so all players should get the same points. plus if they going to do it for the Davis Cup, the Fed Cup committee will be knocking on the doors! plus you got the hopman cup and world tennis tournament, you should award points for those as well!

overall not a good idea especially when other players got massive points to defend in major tournies.

Also, assuming World group matches get more points, say the equivalent of a Masters Cup RR win, then you'll seriously mess up the third, fourth and fifth best players in a country with depth: Ferrero and Moya wouldn't get to play for Spain, and would be seriously disadvantaged compared to their rankings competitors; Similarly Acasuso and Gaudio for Argentina.

Also what happens in dead rubbers? Would Robredo risk losing his top 10 ranking so that Ferrer could get a game? What if Nadal plays a dead rubber, but doesn't care about the result because 100 points is neither here nor there to him......

I like that they're trying to think of ways to jazz up the Davis Cup and get more of the top players to commit. If they could work it out throughly then I think the points idea could work but I emphasise the could, it would need a lot of work and thought to ensure it's fair.

Having said that, if they rush it, like the round robin system (which I don't think would ever have worked) then I don't think it'll work for the reasons already stated.
