All 4 Brits have been in the qualifying here....rd1 and rd2 results:
Rd1: Jade Curtis (GBR) d. Marija Srbinoska (AUS) 60 61 Lucy Fletcher (GBR) d. Karis Ryan (USA) 63 61 (6)Anna Smith (GBR) d. BYE Janelle Cuthbertson (AUS) d. Madelaine Brooks (GBR) 62 62
Rd2: (3)Nikola Frankova (CZE) d. Jade Curtis (GBR) 64 63 Lucy Fletcher (GBR) d. (14)Vivian Silvany-Tony (INA) 63 64 (6)Anna Smith (GBR) d. Michelle Russ (AUS) 46 63 63
Slightly surprised that Anna dropped a set to 18 year old Michelle Russ but Russ is a leftie and maybe it took Anna a while to find her rhythm and get used to her game.
Anna now faces 16 year old Aussie Janelle Cuthbertson for a place in the main draw...at first I thought it was another poor result for Madelaine Brooks in losing so comprehensively to her in qr1 but Cuthbertson is one of Australia's best juniors (ranked in the 200s) and she went on to hammer the 12th seed in qr2. Cuthbertson has a womens ranking in the 1300s.
Fantastic rd2 win for Lucy Fletcher ! Maybe the relief of finally avoiding Michelle Brycki in her section of the draw proved inspirational The Indonesian Viven Silfany-Tony is 17 and an upcoming player, already ranked 734.
Lucy now plays 18 year old Aussie Ashlee Brown who's unranked but knocked out the 4th seed (who's ranked 484 !!!) in straights in qr2 ! Brown beat Madelaine Brooks 1 and 2 a couple of weeks ago.
It was a really tough draw for Jade, Frankova is the world no 12 in the juniors and has a womens ranking of 458 !
Great wins for Anna and Lucy Very straightforward for Anna, didn't expect Lucy Fletcher to win after Ashlee Brown had knocked out the 4th seed !!! One of Lucy's best wins for some time !
Interesting match for Anna. 17 year old Sacha Jones is the world no 12 in the juniors, last year she made the final of lots of G1 and G2s and reached the quarters of the prestigious Canadian Open and the US Open. She beat Naomi Cavaday in straights in August.
She reached a womens ranking high of 738, but has been injured and is now unranked. Played her first tourney of the year in Perth last week, she qualified and then went on to reach rd2, beating a player ranked in the 400s in rd1.
It's a match which could go either way
Lucy Fletcher's chances are slim. Sema is ranked 190 and made the final of Perth last week. In February she qualified for WTA Bangalore and made the quarters. Lucy will do well to avoid a thrashing in this one.
She likes to work the rallies for most of the match, not really going for big shots but just looking to construct the points. She becomes a lot more aggressive in tight situations, has a good cross-court forehand and topspin backhand down the line. Has a quite good serve, her big weakness is her volleying and so opponents often aim to bring her into the net.
I saw a little of Sacha at the US open juniors last year, wasn't very impressed at all really.
Same with the young canadian girl Sharon Fichman who seemed to get over powered then would roll in a deep ball to get into position and the rally would start again. Shes had a very good junior career but can't see her doing anything brill on the WTA tour.
