After making an impressive return to the tour last week in the Gran Canerias 25K, Elena Baltacha now has a realistic chance of making the British Fed Cup team for next month's Euro-African zone matches on Bulgarian clay.
At her best, Baltacha would be a certainty in the team and last year she won 3/4 singles matches and won all 4 doubles rubbers with Claire Curran.
In Gran Canerias, Baltacha brushed aside the 15th seed 6-1, 6-2 and beat Georgie Stoop 6-4, 6-4 in the qualifying before losing her first round match to Romanian teenager Sorana Cirstea in a final set tiebreak.
Fed Cup captain Nigel Sears (who was in Gran Canerias watching the action) told britishtennis.net "I was impressed with Bally's form. Cirstea is a great young player and one who will go high places in the game. Bally led 5-4 in the 3rd and in the end just wanted it a bit too much but she showed she could be ready for Fed Cup action which would be great news."
The power she showed whilst dispatching Katie O'Brien in last years AC when only 80% match fit shows us that when fit and playing our team would be understrength without her !
However, that match was on fast indoor hard and the Fed Cup ties will be on slow Bulgarian clay, not a surface which Bally is particularly fond of She was superb last year, winning 3/4 singles ties and 100% in the doubles but still the selection is far from done and dusted, depends a lot on her form over the next few weeks.
There are only 4 places...Mel South and Claire Curran will surely take two as our doubles team...leaving 2 from Anne, Naomi and Bally. In her current form, can Nigel leave Naomi out ???
Is there any need for the capital letters? Are your opinions really that cutting edge and important that you must draw all of our attentions to them immediately???

John, calm down mate...a lot of ppl don't realise that posting in capitals can be interpreted as shouting, I've seen it happen a lot of times...very easy to just leave the caps lock button on.
Richard..ditto what "the Panda Bear" said....great to have you on this site, you've posted some really interesting things so far, good to have your opinions
It's an tough decision for Nigel Sears to make....Bally did great with Claire Curran last year, won 4/4 doubles rubbers but Mel South has been playing superbly in the doubles - 2 challenger finals this year, including one with Claire last week in Gran Canerias.
Of course, picking Bally instead of Mel gives Nigel another option for the singles too, I guess
I think it would be a bad idea bringing bally back for fed cup. We have a load of new talent coming through, give them a chance! Welcome to the forum arvidssonfan
