Several members of our forum have been wondering what happened to Claire Peterzan. 20 year old Peterzan was ranked as high as 401 in February 2006 and beat a top 200 player last autumn but hasn't competed so far this year. Britishtennis.net caught up with coach Luke Milligan to find out.
Luke said "Claire's currently taking some time out to reassess her options. She's got to the stage when you're not sure whether you're going to be able to make a living out of tennis and so, do you keep plugging away or is it time to go into something different - that's the decision she's trying to make. In Britain, it's slightly easier to make a living out of playing pro tennis than in other countries. For a British player you need to get to the top 180 to do so in the mens game and in the womens game it's a little bit higher, probably top 120. If you're ranked 190-250 and not moving any higher, you can make ends meet for about 5-6 years if you're clever but you have to consider whether you want to remain in tennis after you've retired and if not, that's 5-6 years when you might have been getting academic qualifications."
Q: "Claire had that excellent win over Pauline Parmentier last October, who's top 200. How far do you think she could go in the game ?
Luke: "Claire is a player I'd describe as having a good solid game but the standard in womens tennis today is so incredibly high, it's hard to tell whether she's exceptional enough to make it."
