One way would be if the win wasn't enough to get the tournament into his top 18 scores, but by playing, he increases the number of points scoring tournaments he's played by 1 and who has played the least scoring tournaments is the second tiebreak (after GS+AMS total) when ranking points are level.
I imagine I'm missing a much simpler reason though!

Andy Murray and Morgan Phillips are playing in the Wimbedon 2009 finals against the fearsome combination of Perez-Perez and Perez-Perez. Andy's rank is 13 in the world with a total of 2400 and his 14th best is 50. Morgan is ranked 14 in the world with a total of 2395 and a 14th best of 30.
After the final, Andy will have 3350 points and Mors will have 3365 points.
Well done Seagull (and Rob who correctly PM'd the answer).
The reason I asked the question is that Jamie is now only 11 points behind Butorac, and the next time they get a counting score (hopefully a win in Miami), Jamie (new current 14th = 27)will overtake Butorac (new current 14th = 40) by 2 points!!
