Anne Keothavong has gone for the qualies and made the cut by one place ! Hopefully she's full recovered from whatever injury afflicted her in Las Vegas.
Anne opens against French 15th seed Youlia Fedossova. The 18 year old Frenchwoman (who originates from Russia) is currently ranked at a career high of 117 and has been competing almost entirely in WTA events so far this year. She received a wildcard into the Aussie Open (as part of the French Open - Aussie Open wildcard deal), and won a round before losing to Safina. She also reached the main draw in Memphis, losing a tight rd1 match to American Shenay Perry in 3 sets. Fedossova enjoyed a superb series of results last autumn which catapulted her up the rankings, qualifying for the US Open, making her first WTA quarter-final in Japan and reaching a 50K final indoors.
They've played once before, Fedossova won 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 last August in the first qualifying round for the US Open.
It'll be really tough match, I think Anne can win but she'll need to be at her best and serve a lot better than she's done so far this year
Yeah, good to see them testing themselves in these top quality fields Unfortunately I don't think Anne's playing well enough at the moment to win this one
Her recent record against top 150 girls is very poor and judging from the stats of her matches so far this year, she's been serving badly.
I don't think it will be long before we have quite a few players eligible to enter these WTA qualies given the rate at which Georgie and Naomi are progressing Thoroughly looking forward to seeing how both do on the grass this summer
Superb result ! Anne's first win over a top 150 player for a little while
Both players found breaking much easier than holding serve today but Anne just got those crucial holds when it mattered and found her serving form to reel off 5 straight games in the 3rd.
Next up is China's Meng Yuan, standing between Anne and a place in the main draw. Yuan knocked out Russian 9th seed Alla Kudryavtseva 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) in rd1 presumably to the delight of the Indian Wells umpires but to the dismay of the red-blooded male spectators.
Yuan is 20 and currently ranked 162. However, she's been in the top 100, reaching a high of 92 last May. So far in 2007, she's lost in qualies for Las Vegas, Gold Coast and Hobart but she did qualify for WTA Pattya, losing in rd1. Her 2006 highlights were making the quarters of a 75K and winning a 50K aswell as qualifying for numerous WTAs. In Indian Wells, she made rd3 before losing 6-3, 6-1 to Safina.
It would be brilliant if Anne can reach the main draw here, when was the last time she qualified for a WTA ? Was it Quebec at the end of 2005 ?
The match will again start at about 19.30 pm GMT. There will be live scores, just go to the ATP site and open the Indian Wells scoreboard.
Being Indian Wells, has Anne scored points for that first win?
Hope she can consolidate and reach the main draw. I think she needs just one breakthrough main tour main draw tournament win to really boost her confidence and start pushing up those rankings!
I'm sure Anne's motivation was the ranking points on offer at TMS qualie events-like the GS, early wins are now well rewarded. This single Q1 win is, if I read right, worth 10 points.
Well done for putting herself out there and fighting all the way!

The last time she qualified for a WTA event was Strasbourg 2006. She didn't qualify for Quebec she got in via a combination of a weak main draw and her special ranking.
