Andy's ranking and competitors: Week 8 (Memphis etc)

The Table is posted here (On Britishtennis.net)

It's based on Andy's current points from week 7 - i.e. before the final. Hopefully I'll be changing it in the morning!

Note: Djokovic drops behind Andy, Gasquet goes ahead of him, as various points from last year fall off. Haas also drops back out of the top 10.

That's more like it! Andy starts the week at WR 13, and loses no places, despite losing 20 points because of the 60 he's defending from last year.

Djokovic drops 2 places to 16. Gasquet and Ferrer advance to 15 and 14, as various points from last year fall off. Haas also drops back out of the top 10.

Am I right in saying that Andy can only gain places this week if he gets to the final, and Haas and Berdych do badly (don't get as far as quarters)? Even then he would be 12 as Haas has more mandatory points...?

No doubt Imoen will get round to her "what if"s soon, but things are a bit complicated because the ATP seem to have added the wrong points to everybody who got to the quarters and higher in Marseille; they have added points as for a 175 winner tournament, whereas the drawsheet said it was 200 (and it was 200 last year).

I have emailed them to find out which were the correct points but will be amazed if I get a reply. . .

Gah - I hate the rankings :)

Can someone explain why he only loses 20 points when he's defending 60 this week?

Is it because the 60 from Memphis come off, but then the 40 from Nottingham as his new "5th best" start to count where they didn't before, leaving a net loss of 20?

Got it in one.  No further explanation needed   for the same reason, he'll only start to increase his points if/when he gets more than that "new 5th best" in this tournament

nads I'll do a what if just as soon as my table is sorted, I'm pretty busy at the moment though so it might not be done until late tonight.

From a very very brief glance at the table looks like Andy can't get any higher than 11 this week.

Did the Marseille points issue get sorted?

No. No reply to my email and the rankings still show the lower value of points. I wouldn't put it past them, if they have dropped a clangor, to just put it right without saying, so I'll keep checking on the rankings position. Quick check is Gasquet - ATP say 1580 having added just 40 for quarters, we had 1590 having added 50 for quarters.

Guess what?  I think the ATP are at the moment in process of correcting their dropped brick

At this very moment Gasquet's points on the rankings page stand at 1580, but the detail now shows 50 for Marseille and a total of 1590. . . so I assume they are in the middle of corrections!

hehe silly ATP. Glad it's sorted though, it's bad enough trawling through the rankings when they're all right!

All (almost) sorted now: their rankings tables are corrected.

However wonderful ****- up on the front page: http://www.atptennis.com/3/en/rankings/

- They have Gilles Simon aas their featured player, but have his ranking wrong

Edit: ahh, sorry Rob either I clicked the wrong button or Activeboard is stupid - I think I'm gonna go for the latter!

The long awaited What if?

So, I'm going to try and do colours/underline etc as usual, apologies if it fails to appear on the final post:

If Andy wins Memphis: He will have 1840 points. He could overtake Berdych (out by qf in R) and Haas (out by sf inM). He could be overtaken by no one.
Best case: 11 (+2)
Worst case: 13(nc)

If Andy loses in the final: He will have 1765 points. He could overtake no one. He could be overtaken by Ferrer(final R) and Djokovic(win R).
Best case: 13(nc)
Worst case: 14(-1)[Ferrer and Djokovic would meet in the sf]

If Andy loses in the sf: He will have 1700 points. He could overtake no one. He could be overtaken by Ferrer(sf R) and Djokovic(final R).
Best case: 13(nc)
Worst case: 15(-2)

If Andy loses in the qf: He will have 1650 points. He could overtake no one. He could be overtaken by Ferrer(qf R) and Djokovic(sf R).
Best case: 13(nc)
Worst case: 15(-2)

If Andy loses in the 1st or 2nd round: He will have 1630 points. He could overtake no one. He could be overtaken by Ferrer(sf R) and Djokovic(sf R).
Best case: 13(nc)
Worst case: 15(-2)

So in conclusion. If things really go Andy's way he could gain a couple of places. Otherwise it's either 13, 14 or 15 for him.

And for anyone who's interested, Andy is currently 345 points away from the top 10.

Poor guy! He finally wins an ATP and then his ranking's wrong! I wonder if he realises? (are all tennis players as nerdy about their rankings as the Murray brothers?)

Ferrer can overtake Andy by reaching the quarters of Rotterdam if he loses within the first two rounds of Memphis.

So he can. Sorry, I only added 40 points for a qf then for some reason. Thanks for pointing that out Arka. I will have changed it in about 30secs
