Qualifying (British matches): This event requires players to go through a gruelling 4 rounds to reach the main draw. Makes you wonder why they didn't play Melilla instead which has a weaker field and only 3 rounds, even if it is on the nasty red stuff.
Do we know whether Natasha Khan pulled out due to doing so well in the last tournament or does her as-yet-unupdated ranking mean she gets a DA (1st qual seed is 502 and Natasha has done from about 510 up into the 400s last week). Or maybe a special entry?
The ranking for entry wouldn't have kicked in for a DA.
She might have got a Special Exempt place, though. These are for players who are in action near or during qualies but would have been in qualies but for participation in the MD event of equal or higher rank from the previous week.
Natasha not in MD either...pulled out after the week's efforts.
R1: (3) Becky Llewelyn vs Soler Espinosa (Spa, 393) R1: O'Donoghue vs Huck (Fra, 413)
QR3: Emily W-S bt (10) Ferreira WR 663 7-5 6-3 Scarfi lost to Schoeffel (Fra, UNR) 6-0 6-2 Looks bad, but Schoeffel has lost just four games in three matches! Anna Hawkins lost to Vollmeier (Slo, 1386) 6-4 1-6 6-1 (12) Julia Bone vs Alice Tisset (Fra, 1121) still to play
Final QR Emily W-S vs 6 Rossi (Bra, 617) Rossi has dropped just 9 games in 4 sets so far.
Four game qualification..... They all be too tired to play the MD!
Final QR Rossi bt Webley-Smith 6-4 6-2 Feurestein bt Bone 6-1 6-1 on the plus side.... Emily gets a LL spot....on the minus side, its against the number 2 seed Kosinska (Pol 327)
Great win by Wobbly I wonder why the final set was so one-sided.
What is it about Brits and lucky loser places? First there was Natasha Khan last week, now Emily and on the men's side, 2/2 LLs reached R2 at Exmouth compared to only 1/9 of the DA/qualifiers/WCs combined!
I guess they always say the Brits make good losers ...

I must say I was seriously tempted by "Webley wobbles in Portimao" for my article on britishtennis.net but decided against it in case she reads this site !
Kalabina is evidently 'hot' at the minute-she was a SE: She qualified in a 10K last week and lost in the final. The week before she qualified and hit QF.
