As far as I can see the lowest he can go is 17, if either Baghdatis, Nieminen, or Stepanek win Marseille, which is reassuringly unlikely.

Are you sure, Arka? Marseilles is a 200 pointer. Seems to me that by winning, supposing Andy went out in the first round (heaven forbid!), Nieminen could overtake, and Stepanek if he wins Marseille would have qualifying points to add as well, so 205 points would take him past Andy.

I sincerely hope this is purely an academic discussion - Andy is NOT going to lose in the early stages.

Andy's worst possible total is 1515.

Stepanek is on 1325 and defends 15. The maximum he can go up to is 1325-15+205=1515 points. I guess that he has less compulsory points than Andy because he was out of action for quite a few months. The ATP site is still down.

Jarkko has 1320 with an eighteenth of 75, so his best total is of 1320-75+200=1445.

Or so Arka thinks...

Here cometh the 'what if' post. I'm not taking into account any first round results. Mainly because I really can't face trawling through results right now. I have taken in Stepanek's qualifying for Marseille.

If Andy wins in San Jose: he will end with 1650 points, same as he started with. He would re-overtake Gasquet(out by final), Ferrer(out by semi), Djokovic(out by quarters). And could be overtaken by no one.
Best case: 13
Worst case:16

If Andy loses the final in San Jose: he will end with 1595 points. He would overtake Gasquet (lose in rd1). He could be overtaken by no one.
Best case: 15
Worst csae: 16

If Andy loses the semi in San Jose: he will end with 1530 points. He would overtake no one. He could be overtaken by no one.
Best case: 16
Worst case: 16

If Andy loses the quarter in San Jose: he will end with 1515 points. He would overtake no one. He could be overtaken by Baghdatis (win Marseille).
Best case: 16
Worst case: 17

If Andy loses the second round in San Jose: same as for quarters.

If Andy loses the first round in San Jose: same as for quarters.

So odds on Andy will end the week ranked 16 in the world.

Today's action is Andy plaing Kim in San Jose, and before that, Baghdatis playing Tipsarevic in Marseilles, so we can focus on just the one match. Unearth those Cypriot wax dolls, ladies, and get sticking pins in!
