Melbourne 25K 2007.

This begins on 12th Feb and is played on clay.

The cut has dropped so much that Jade Curtis is just four places from a direct entry. Madelaine Brook, Lucy Fletcher and Nicola Mooney are also on the lists.

Wow... Not to insult Jade or anything (you all know how much I lover her) but that is a freaking LOW cut... How many MD withdrawls can we expect? Is it fair to say she should end up in the main draw without qualifying?

All of the players ahead of her are Priority 1s, so it'll be touch and go in my opinion...

She's sure to be one of the top seeds in qualifying anyway so she should have a great chance of making the main draw. Qualifying for it would actually be better in many ways as she'd get extra points and have 3 matches under her belt before coming up against some of the big guns in the main draw.

Yeah, and she qualified for a 25K in Sydney this week last year, so she needs the points.

I was just thinking that the practice would be good. Hopefully she can add to her points total as well...

And Mr. Jason Spence! Your step-daughter is a brilliant Women's player and should no longer be wasting her time on Junior events! ;)

Qualifying started in the small hours of Saturday morning but still no sign of the draw anywhere

The Tennis Australia site used to be really great, very up to date with draws and results for mens and womens Australian challengers and futures. They also often had reports, quotes and pics. Unfortunately they've now made a load of changes so it now sucks - harder to navigate and doesn't provide any of the useful info the old one did.

Qualifying results:

Rd1: Jade Curtis (4), Madelaine Brooks (6) and Lucy Fletcher (8) all got byes

Rd2:
J Curtis (4) bt Ashleigh Richardson (Aus)(ranked 1438)  6-3, 6-1
M Brooks (6) bt Sarah Benad (Aus)(ranked 1481) 6-1, 6-3
L Fletcher (8) bt Stephanie Wiltshire (Aus)(unranked) 7-6(4), 6-1

Rd3:
J Curtis (4) bt Emelyn Starr (Aus)(ranked 1464) 6-4, 6-2

Great wins for Jade and Madelaine but a disappointing final qualies loss for Lucy against someone ranked 200 places lower

Main draw:

Rd1:
M Brooks (q)  v  Cassandra Chan (Aus)(q)(wr:1130)
J Curtis (q)   v   C Wheeler (Aus)(7)

Great draw for Madelaine, she faces a qualifier ranked 6 places lower !  Chan is 20 and didn't really achieve anything worth writing home about in 2006, making rd2 of a couple of 10Ks were her best results. This is her first tournament of 2007.

Jade hasn't been so fortunate, Christina Wheeler is ranked 618 places higher at 402.  Not only that, back in 2003 she was in the top 150 with a career high of 147.  2006 highlights were two 25K quarters plus qualifying for WTA Hobart. She played 3 British players, Danielle Brown, Melissa Berry and Jessica Jackson and each only managed to win a handful of games.

Both play tonight/overnight!

Great chance for Brooks as you say. Curtis is probably praying right now!

Jade Curtis teamed up with good young New Zealand player Ellen Barry to beat an unranked Aussie pair in Doubles main draw!

Next up 2nd seeds Dell'Aqua and Dominikovic...

Jade is a great doubles player... Maybe they can pull off an upset?

for the singles though...

Jade went down 6-1 6-1.
Brooks lost 4-6 6-4 6-4

Both can at least leave with the happy knowledge of good progress through the qualies as well as a qualifying point.

Jade and partner got a w/o into doubles semi. Jade may yet get a good amount of her expenses paid from this trip, as well as some ranking points.
