Unfortunately Kennaugh lost in rd1 to unranked Frenchman Alain Ntamag for the second week running A shame, as he was seeded 7th and had a good chance of getting through. I've no idea why Ntamag is unranked, last week he qualified and then gave Sidorenko a close match in rd1.
Miles and Ed got through though Miles' opponent retired with Miles leading 7-5, 1-0. Ed won 2 and 3.
Tricky but winnable matches for both of them next, the sort of matches they need to be winning if they're going to make inroads this year....
Corrie v Drouet: The stats suggest that the match wasn't quite as one-sided as the scoreline suggests, Drouet just took his chances. He converted 3/3 break points while Ed missed both of his 2 chances, which came in set 2.
Ed hit 2 aces but 3 double faults. He made 59% 1st serves and won 22/34 first serve pts, 11/24 on 2nd serve pts. Drouet hit 4 aces and made 74% 1st serves (*3% in the 1st set) which looks to have made a big difference in the amount of chances Ed had compared to what Drouet had. Drouet won 38/48 pts on 1st serve and 7/17 on 2nd serve.
Kasiri v Walter: Kasiri's serving was superb in this match, surprisingly no aces but 70% 1st serves in ! He won 26/35 1st serve pts and 9/15 on 2nd serve. As a result Walter didn't really get a look in on the Kasiri service games and only had 1 bp in the entire match.
In contrast Walter's 1st serve was down at 54%. He won 17/25 pts when he got it in but Kasiri really punished the Frenchman's 2nd serve, winning 15/21 of the pts when he got a look at that ! Kasiri had 7 bps overall and took 4 of them.
Sitak is ranked 703 (career high of 356 but that was back in 2003). He's had an ordinary start to the year, lost in rd1 of France F1 and qualified last week but lost in rd1 again. Dropped a set in his opening qualies match here and then blitzed through today, winning 2 and 1. From what I can make out from the stats, he gets a lot of first serves in but it isn't particularly big. If Miles plays as well as he did today, he should have a good chance.
