Austria F3 - Bergheim by Salzburg 10K (carpet)

Not on the ATP list (and it's not the first of this year's Futures not to be), but Slabba pops up here:

QR1: (q2) Alex Slabinsky WR 819 v Yannick Weihs (AUT) WR 1541 - QR2 opponent for the winner will be unranked

QR1: Edward Allinson WR 1541 v Christian Kloimullner (AUT) WR 1541

Hope Slabba can hit form here and do well. He needs the points badly.

Allinson picked his surface intelligently here to make best use of his booming serve.

I wait with trepidation

Alex's nose is a lot better now, he's been unable to compete for the last two weeks because of that. He'd planned to play France F1 last week but wasn't ready. It's been frustrating for him as he had to turn down the Sunderland wildcard and he'd been playing so well in Sheffield.

This week he said he'd either be playing here or in France, I guess he chose this tournament because the field is weaker. Alex played here last year and didn't particularly like it as the courts are very slippy so movement is difficult. The big servers therefore will have a massive advantage here, Allinson has a good chance of qualifying if he plays well.

I have a couple of results and it's very good news

Alex is through to the final qualifying round

He beat Yannick Weihs 6-2, 6-1 in rd1 and then defeated some geezer called Linzer 6-3, 6-3 in rd2.

Hoping to hear from Alex later about the matches.

I don't know how Allinson did.

Yeah that'd be cool

Unfortunately it's bad news regarding Allinson.

He won his first match 6-2, 7-5 but then lost his rd2 qualies match 6-4, 6-3 to Miroslav Mecir, the son of the top Slovakian tennis player in the 1980s.

* Checks the date in the hope that it's 1 April *

He must have a good chance of a LL place (and in Futures, that means no harm done, since you don't get points for qualifying anyway), but if he gets a LL place and wants any points this week, he'll have to play a heck of a lot better!

No LL as of last night. Unless someone pulls out last minute. BUT

if you search for the Capriolo 25K thread in british womens discussion forum an explanation says LL are drawn out of a hat now, not by ranking to avoid top seeds tanking matches.

I guess that would apply to futures as well but can't confirm.

Also ATP challengers and futures page hasn't listed this tournament or Costa Rica for this week.

Does that mean they're not ATP sanctioned or just a mistake...

A minute consolation is that Slabba's conquerer Jelinek bt 4th seeded Italian ranked 466 6-2 6-0 in MD R1.

He's 24 with no ranking. A late newcomer. Perhaps with promise...
