Week 38 - ITF ($25k) - Cairns, Australia Hard

After Julia K served two consecutive DFs for her first two service points, it was always going to be a struggle.

They did well but ended up losing the MTB 7-10

Yes, a pity that, the first set was promising and hoped they might spring an upset. Unfortunately reaching the QF only nets $196 between them so is not going to contribute too muc to Soumeya's crowdfunding campaign for this 5 tournament trip to Aus.

Super by Jodie   biggrin

She might enquire of Katy D why it took her 6 goes to best Hozumi

By the way, Laura has 15 points coming off on 01/10 ( and Jodie 2 points off ) so 2 more wins and she will actually be GB #9 just ahead of Maia.

Live for 01/10 :  Maia 89, Laura 83, Beth 78, Jodie 77, Tara 77

Re the predictions competition, with further points to drop before D day, Laura won't hold onto a top 10 place.

Gulp, er ehm, it would be great if she could get to GB #9 a bit higher than being on just 90 points, since then we will have both our #9 and 10 ranked outside the top 400 - and with more than a 180 place gap to Katy in the #8 position.

Sorry, I had initially left out Tara, as you said earlier also on 77 points. All very tight and others not that much further behind but above yes that huge gap to the top 8. Be great if one or two could move at least some way into it.

Whilst recognising the joke, I think this is a good example of how important the match up of game styles is in tennis.

Katy, despite having scored some wins over the last year or so, clearly finds something in Eris game challenging, Jodie maybe less so. Katy however defeated Astra Sharma in two high quality sets last month, whilst Freya seemingly struggles against her today (losing fairly heavily).

Not sure Ive made my point very convincingly, but I think at times its easy to only look at rankings when predicting results/commenting on them and not recognise that doesnt tell anywhere near the whole story.

FWIW, Jodie was 10/11 to beat the Japanese opponent going into the match today (Hozumi was 4/5), whereas Freya was a significant outsider at 7/2 to beat the fast improving Sharma.

Great win for her though and always nice to beat someone who is ranked significantly higher.

Jodie isn't hanging around as she storms through the first set in 21 minutes to take it 6-1

The second set wasn't quite so straight forward. Jodie broke in the 5th game only for the Hong Kong player to break straight back. Another break in the 9th game gave Jodie the opportunity to serve it out which she duly did.

R16: Jodie BURRAGE [Q] 468 vs Ling ZHANG (HKG) 449 (CH:184 Sept 11) 6-1 6-4

Next up is Bhosale or Mcphee. Bhosale is a set up but Mcphee is a break up in the second set.

Jodie up to 91 points now in the live rankings for 1 Oct. She needs to win this match to pass both Laura and Maia in those live rankings to reach the GB #9 position by then. Astra Sharma also going strong for a potential match up in the SF. Keep it going Jodie!

QF: Jodie BURRAGE [Q] 468 vs Kaylah MCPHEE (AUS) 385=CH

Decent chance in the next round as well, she is actually the betting favourite but is up against her first Aussie on the main draw.

A semi final in a 25k, coming through quallies would be absolutely superb - really hope she does it.
