Maia's opponent defeated Alicia Barnett, 1 & 1, in qualifying at Belgian $10K in 2015.
She's been playing (mediocre level) college tennis for Florida State since then.

Maia is finally on court for her first round match, and is immediately under the gun, going a break down 3-4*
Her serving stats are poor with 6 BPs and 2 breaks going against her in just 4 service games, but the last one was finally a more comfortable hold.

The breaks continued until a TB, Julia failing to serve out the set twice. Then Maia was 5-4 up in the TB, but lost the last 3 points 6-7(5)
She really needs to improve her first serve % ins and wins this set to pull things around.

Yes, thankfully Maia did indeed improve both her first serve % - from 54% to 64% in the first and second sets
And also her first serve % wins - from 56% to 75% respectively
With her second serve % wins declining slightly - 48% to 44%
So she needs to keep up her first serving in the third set.

Maia carried her improved 2nd set form, especially on serving, across into the 3rd set too to make it across the line. Plays a junior in the next round who does not have much of a record and should easily have too much for her.

R32: LUMSDEN, Maia (GBR) 1 400 beat MIKULSKI, Julia (GER) Q UNR 6-7(5) 6-1 6-1

R16: LUMSDEN, Maia (GBR) 1 400 vs Stephanie Judith VISSCHER (NED) [WC] 1223 (CH:1216 July 18) 18yrs (JCH:1511 Feb 17)

Maia wins 6-7(5) 6-1 6-1. Another great comeback from losing the first set.

Yes, I think the first set can be put down to warm up.

Indeed, and unlike Katie Boulter, Maia doesn't have a great record in this regard in 2018.

I am reliably informed that the win today "... was Maia's 3rd comeback of the year, which makes her record, 3-14 during that period, for a comeback % of 17.65%. This is about the mid point for our leading dozen or so players, and in fact exactly ties Maia with Alicia & Katy, both of whom also have 3-14 records."
