RE: Week 24 - Challenger (€127,000+H) - Nature Valley Open - Nottingham, Great Britain (grass) - doubles

Seeing as this has become the "why let facts get in the way of a good story thread", I feel compelled to waste my time and address a few points.

There has been four challengers in the UK this year so far and Ed Corrie has yet to recieve a wild card into a single one of them, singles or doubles. And in the last five years he has recieved a grand total of three main draw singles wild cards.

Marcus Willis is currently ranked 217 in doubles, and no one ranked ahead of him has been denied a chance to compete. He and Jay beat the defending champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut at last years Wimbledon.

The times Nick Kyrgios has given a walkover in doubles are as follows. AO this year - his good friend and travel companion Matt Reid unselfishley and against Nick's wishes withdrew the team from the doubles so as to save his energy for Nick's singles fourth round. As a result of withdrawing without an injury, Reid lost the points he earned by winning his first round which as a doubles specialist were crucial to him. Shanghai last year - he retired from his singles so was clearly injured. Madrid semis last year - he didn't play Rome the week after so probably injured. US Open 2016 with Evo - both players were injured. US Open 2015 mixed with Bouchard - this is the year of the infamous slipping incident. Sydney 2015 - no idea but first round and no alternate had bothered to sign in and take their place. He has retired and given walkovers in several singles events over the years. Maybe he shouldn't play in these either?

Jo Konta has played doubles at Nottingham the last two years with Wickmayer as a direct entry, reaching the semis last year. Last year that was the only home doubles tournament she played. She has recieved wild cards in the past, mainly at Wimbledon where there are plenty to go around and more often than not done well.

But please carry on talking bollocks if you wish. smile

So that's just the three Grand Slam champions on court for a challenger QF. Good luck Joe. smile

Factually incorrect!! Ed Corrie received a wild card into the Loughborough Challenger you will see this on the following link: Challengerhttp://www.atpworldtour.com/en/scores/archive/loughborough/7918/2018/draws.

As for Willis, that was last year, some of us live in the present.

I did not read the rest fully as it looks as though it refers to comments made by others.

Seeing as you were completely wrong with your first point, I think it fair to assume it is you Wolf not others who is talking b*ll*cks.  A very mature way to make your point by the way!

Since 2016 Kyrios has played doubles in 21 tournaments: pretty much grand slams or masters tournaments. He has given walkovers for four of those and retired hurt in one. I would have thought a rate of nearly 25% pulling out of events is pretty high. If I was a doubles player who just failed to qualify, Id be pretty miffed. Its not that I dont like singles players playing doubles. Kyrios is wonderful to watch. But I just think they should either commit to play or not.

Apologies for missing the Loughborough wild card. Still, he's not exactly been rolling in wild cards has he? Every British player gets them some.

Going by that logic, Kyrgios shouldn't play in singles either as he pulled out of plenty of those.

probably wouldn't have got that wild card if a bunch of our players weren't still on the clay either

Well maybe he should get fined if it keeps happening, yes.

I believe Nick has been struggling with an elbow injury for some time. I agree the frequent retirements or not playing (RG, for instance and Portugal) is a bit much and he should probably consider surgery rather than trying to manage it the way he is.

But Hey, it's all easy to say from a sofa :)

I've had enough of the wildcards for Clarke /Willis. It's over for Marcus as a professional sportsman and It's not doing anything to advance Jay's career to pair him with Marcus. It also rubs salt in the wounds of many Brits that are rising in the rankings and making their living of the tour as doubles specialists. Even if they win today, what's the point?

Same goes for Brits wanting 'court practice' like Jo Konta, a terrible doubles player that keeps getting wild cards (I know it's a men's thread but it was the most obvious example).

Yes, there does feel something of a circus act about the whole thing.

Meanwhile, the pair have lost in two tie-breaks.

I did post a few weeks ago about the 'death knoll' of mixed doubles and the ongoing belittling of doubles. I personally think doubles /mixed could reinvigorate tennis and breathe life into the sport. I personally believe big changes are ahead in all formats of tennis. It's already happening albeit in trials

Why do you think tennis needs reinvigorating and how do you think introducing more doubles will breathe life into the sport? What trials are happening? I enjoy playing doubles and love watching Davis Cup doubles, but singles is more exciting to watch for me personally in ATP tournaments.

Firstly, I love tennis in all formats. Do rules and new formats needs introducing? possibly. I think it is starting to lose pace with competing sports that are being viewed /televised and a lot of that is coming down to the length of individual matches. This is one of the reasons they are looking at shortening the matches, like the stop clock, no advantage, scrapping lines officials, new formats of Davis cup  etc. It's hard to fit in a live tennis match (network scheduling)that could go anywhere between a few minutes (retirement) to several hours between sports that have very specific live timings, ie football, boxing etc. Therefore networks are becoming less enthusiastic to show live tennis between other big live events (which many would say have bigger global audiences). I believe they are wanting to shrug off the 'stuffiness' of tennis and make it more appealing to a younger audience also, . Hence the Next Gen trials. I can't give specific quotes, it's just from listening to ex / current players, commentators etc.

My reference to doubles was this would be a perfect way to introduce new rules as it is already naturally a quicker format of tennis.

Feel free to 'waste your time' on other forums Wolf. I can't see anyone queuing up to be insulted by you on this forum for having an opinion or for you to waste your time on us. As stated you are also factually incorrect. I'm not Wikipedia!! Nor are you so lets be grown up's?

Can we please stop the personal insults....
I haven't had to delete posts and warn people on the forum rules before and I don't really want to start now.

I'm not Wikipedia but I'm also not calling players either terrible or not even a professional sportsman.

And there's a whole lot of difference between overlooking one thing and using incorrect statements to insult players.
