Week 24 - ITF ($100k) - Manchester, Grass

As expected, a fair few more have withdrawn today. Boulter is currently in the main draw here, but you'd expect her and Gabi to get Nottingham WCs. Would the likes of Dunne, Dart, Swan, Robson etc. generally prefer to get MDWCs here or QWCs for Nottingham if given the choice?

I'm pretty sure they would take MDWC for Manchester. Decent chance for points and reasonable prize money and practice time.
QWC for Nottingham is a big risk as you are likely to bump into a top 100 player.

Swan has also withdrawn today. Looks like it will be her and Gabi for the Nottingham WCs.

Hopefully. If her name quietly disappears from the Surbiton list in the coming days, I'll be concerned that Spain retirement was more serious.

If they only have 2 traditional WCs and they go to Swan and Taylor, then I'd hope they would have asked Boulter first given that she is the highest ranked, probably in the best form (60k title) and it's her local tournament and that she opted for Manchester instead for cheaper points. There were 3 GB WCs last year, so hopefully will be the case again this year if they don't use up their 2 top 20 WCs. You'd probably say Boulter, Taylor and Swan were best placed to make the most impact there so I'll be fine if those 3 end up being the 3 MDWCs.

Harriet is almost certainly in the main draw now with Naomi and Katie B. So that will mean 7 in the main draw plus any qualifiers.

Harriet is now in the main draw list, but Katie B seems to have gone

Katy D is also in the main draw (as will Claire Lu) just below her because there are only 20 in that main list so will move 4 spaces below.

Gosh, big mess up by team Robson.

Late withdrawals in Notts meant Laura was moved into qualies. She then withdrew, but having been accepted, however briefly in a WTA event she now can't play single here. If she does, she gets no points and a fine.

So that's another wildcard for here freed up

According to an interview I read earlier, I thought Laura didn't feel ready to play singles again just yet ? Still ongoing hip problem.

Nottingham WCs now confirmed for those two.

Edit: Embarrassingly, I'm about 8 hours behind the Nottingham thread

I'd probably take a WC into Notts qualies over a MDWC here if I had the option, the Notts qualies cut is now around 350 and a win is 12 points.

By process of elimination, we can work out who is up for the WCs
Robson (if fit)
Sam Murray
Beth Grey
Emily Appleton
With EWS or a top junior as another option.

Looking at the entry list I think there are 7 withdrawals - Zhao, Myers, Tere-Apisah, Moore, Burrage, Silva and E Taylor all in Nottingham, and if Robson has also withdrawn (though that's a question mark) , would make it 8. Dunne and Liu should take the final two MD spots. That should then mean that Ola Pitak, Emma Wilson and Laura Sainsbury move into qualifying. Assuming the 4 MD WCs go to those already in qualifying, that would then move Kat Pitak, Holly Hutchison, Anna Popescu and Summer Yardley into qualifying. There are going to be quite a few girls getting a QWC that may not have expected to.

Out of interest, are itf women's qualifying draws always out on a Saturday or is this one later than usual?

It's really based on when qualifying starts Jon, since the draw comes out the evening before. They only have two days of qualifying in Manchester this week, according to the LTA tournament website, and are only starting the qualifying on Sunday, hence the draw is only out this evening. I suspect this is also partly to give them time to see who exactly is playing in Nottingham, and who isn't, because there are a quite a few people on the Manchester q list that have appeared in the Nottingham q draw!

If there is a sign in for qualifying, it may also be so that those now eligible for the Manchester qualifying know it in advance, and I assume they will also only allocate the q WCs after seeing the finalised Nottingham draw.
