Quarter Finals

Cardiff are 2-0 up against Thongsbridge: Marcus Willis, Simon Dickinson v Jonathan Dow, Thomas Sanders 6-3,6-3 & Craig Evans, Chris Lewis v Ben Gudzelak, Ellis Ward 6-7, 7-6(3)

Gosling & David Lloyd Leeds 1-1: David Rice, Phil Stevens v Ivan Dechovsky, Benjamin Mitchell 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 & Jake Penny, James Wilkinson v Luke Johnson , Brandon Murphy 1-6, 1-3 retired as James has twisted his ankle on the carpet and will take no further part in the competition.

Millfield are 2-0 up against Tennis World Mids: Matt Jackman,Richard Love v Matt Carroll, Dan Manilow 6-7(3), 4-6, 1-0 & james Lees, Ben Smuk v Tiernana Brady, Matt james 5-7, 0-6, 0-1

whilst Putney LTC and Queens are 1-1: Josh Girling, Ashtey Pauls v Oscar Poldlewski, Jamie Whiteford 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 and Charles Dryden , Alistair Felton v Anton Bettink, Lewis Burton 3-6, 5-7, 1-0

Day 1 results are:

Cardiff met v Thornbridge 4-0, not surprising given the strength of the Cardiff team.

Gosling v David Lloyd Leeds 1-3 including a walk over due to injury :0(

Putney LTC v The Queens Club 1-3

Tennis World Middlesborough v Millfield 0-4

Interesting assortment of players in this tournament from those still eligible to play 18U, to former Division 1 college players, those with a world ranking who had a go at turning pro and are now coaching to Marcus W who is a pro, but no idea if hes former alumni of Cardiff Met?

Tomorrow is Cardiff Met v David Lloyd Leeds my prediction Cardiff Met to win  even though Luke J very strong and Millfield v The Queens Club, finding this one harder to predict and my tennis savant is stuck on the A1 coming back from Leeds..... Queens apparenly.

Out of interest, how do these differ from the aegon team tennis that is talked about elsewhere ( realise aegon no longer sponsored)

Reply to question from Jon H

Sorry Jon, I dont know the whole deal , just been following this for the last few years as my child started playing in the league and I know a number of the players so like to see how they are progressing. Maybe someone else could comment?

One of the differences I remember is with AEGON the players have to have some link to the club and with National Premier League allegedly some players are paid to represent a team. Also NPL has prize money, >£2000 for the winner and smaller amounts for those lower in the final. Can't ever remember prize money associated with AEGON?

Thanks EP - from what I can tell

(AEGON/LTA) Team tennis seems to be a singles thing as per blurb below:

Team Tennis is a singles based team competition open for all LTA Registered Venues. It aims to provide players of all ages (8&U Open) with regular league matches, against similar standard players in a competitive team environment. A total of 6,158 teams from over 1,070 venues are playing in Team Tennis 2017. It was also been a record season in terms of the number of fixtures completed. A total of 10,110 fixtures were completed in 2017 - the first time the competition has ever exceeded 10,000 completed fixtures in it's 24 year history.

Whereas NPL seems to be a doubles event!

and thats about all I could glean!

National Premier League (NPL) is a competition organised privately by Mike Dixon. He owns it and runs it. It's just doubles, with 4 men in each team. Clubs pay £100 to enter and are then drawn into regional qualifiers. From memory you used to require indoor courts, because it's a winter based season. Then the finals day plus gala ball are held in Yorkshire each year, around this time. It's a very good level.

"Team Tennis" formerly Aegon Team Tennis and formerly National Club League (NCL) on the other hand is nationally organised by the LTA. Clubs pay £18 to enter and are then drawn into county divisions with progression to regional and then national divisions. With an annual national finals day in September in Eastbourne (at least for the open age category). Each match is 4 x singles rubbers and then 2 x doubles rubbers. The prize pot used to be £100k but is now more like £25k.

This year's finals have just been held:

David Lloyd Leeds beat David Lloyd Sunderland 6-2, Luke Johnson and Brandon Murphy winning both their two matches, including a very narrow match tiebreak 10-8 over Jonathan Binding and Sam Archer.

Queens beat Cardiff Met 6-2 in the other semi. Lewis Burton and Lee Childs winning both their matches including a match tiebreak vs Matthew James and James Story.

Queens beat David Lloyd Leeds 6-2 in the final. Lewis and Lee were undefeated again, including a 6-0 6-0 win over Leeds top pair Luke and Brandon (which seems a bit odd). Luke and Brandon had won their first match against Francisco Dias and Oscar Podlewski.

The gala dinner looked pretty cool, with Judy Murray and John Hartson as the guest speakers.

From the Facebook page it looks like there was a women's event too - won by Wilton, a Wimbledon based club.  I'm pretty sure they have been Aegon Team Tennis national champions a few times recently too.  From the photos I think I recognise Emily Appleton, Olivia Nichols and possibly Louise Holtum.  Anyway, whoever was in the team...Well Done Ladies

I think the other two are Laura Deigman and Victoria Allen
