Week 16 - ATP Masters 1000 - Monte-Carlo (clay)

L56:  Kyle Edmund WR 26 (CH = 24 last month) vs Alexandr Dolgopolov (UKR) WR 52 (CH = 13 in January 2012)

Dolgo leads the head-to-head by 2-0, having beaten Kyle in straight sets in the first round at Nottingham in 2016 & at Wimbledon the year before that, so both on grass.  Rafa's the top seed.  Aljaz plays a qualifier inthe first round & then Rafa, if he wins.

Tough section for Kyle. Busta awaits the winner.

Looks like Kyle missed being seeded by one spot. Mannarino WR 25 is seeded 16.

Cam is not in qualifying, was he just a couple of places out and not made it?

He would have made cut if he wanted to play

Yes, missed out by that one spot with no higher ranked player being kind enough to withdraw.

So from that moment, Kyle was at the mercy of being bracketed with any of these players for R2. With the top 8 seeds getting byes R2 will be 8th seed Busta's opening match.

Let's hope Kyle can see off Dolpo. A game against Busta is one I would like to see, a good test of Kyles early form on clay, regardless of the outcome playing Busta early doors will inform Kyle's preparation for RG.

Well he can't be in two tournaments at once, Kyle is supposed to play the Dog tomorrow according to Google. And if he wins the QF, he will be playing SF later today.

Presumably MC main draw wont actually start until Monday though?

I see with Sousa, Basilishvili and Andujar still in Marrakech, they couldnt make the MC Qualies and so Cam would have comfortably got into the qualifying draw. Probably a shame I think that he  decided to miss it, not sure if anyone knows why?

On the MC website they have the programme showing 5 first round matches tomorrow and not the 17 google is showing, so I think Google has probably got it wrong. I am sure Kyle wont start until Monday

Hopefully you are right Jon and Google is wrong! Can't complain about no matches with about 4 in 3 days!

Maybe as suggested in the entries thread Cam just didn't think he'd make it into qualifying so made alternative arrangements. But it always seemed pretty possible. I think he's made perhaps a couple of other interesting choices and/or misjudgements fairly recently.

Last direct acceptance into MC qualifying was Sorengo WR162, so Cam would definitely have been in if he chose.

And some of the first round MD matches aren't scheduled until Tuesday anyway, so I'm sure they will accommodate Kyle regardless of when he finishes this weekend.
