Aus Open Main Draw

Jo's section looks nasty.

The most extraordinary feature of the draw is that, if I'm reading it right, every single one of 16 qualifiers has drawn another qualifier in R1. I wouldn't have any idea how to calculate the odds of this, but I'd presume that it's a few billion to one.

...in fact, by far the most likely explanation is that the software for the draw has been written wrong.

EDIT: Or, more likely still, I can't read the draw correctly...

Nah, the men's draw is the same, with 8 QvQ clashes. The odds go up into the quadrillions to one against.

Unless there's been a rule change, this will have to be voided, and drawn again.

Yes, it looks like a software error to me too. I agree the odds are too high otherwise.

Not sure what draws you are looking at?

I see qualifiers against Giorgi, Gasparan, Hsieh etc etc

CORRECTION:

Yep, looks okay now. Perhaps accessed an early draft, with lots of blanks, now filled in. Please all ignore panic above.

That I can't read a draw properly turns out to be by far the highest probability.

I saw it on the AO app on my phone, but it has sorted itself out now, although the app itself seems worse than previous years.

A very top heavy draw. Put your money on Svitolina now.

If Jo beats Brengle she has Gasparyan or a qualifier in R2.

Thereafter potentially among this little lot from the top quarter if the seeds take their L32 places ( and that's probably a rather big if ) :

(1) Halep vs (27) Kvitova
(18) Barty vs (16) Vesnina
(9) Konta vs (20) Strycova
(29) Safarova vs (6) Ka Pliskova

I have Heather beats Putintseva she has (11) Mladenovic or Bogdan in R2. Kiki is on an awful run, 14 successive losses stretching back to R2 of the Washington International tournament at the start of August. She retired in the second set of her match this week in Sydney.

who's Gasparyan? - she's not even in the top 1000

Margarita Gasparyan - career high 41 - but no recent activity and no ranking. So how did she get in ?

Margarita Gasparyan (RUS), age 23, CH 41 in February 2016.

No activity for 15 months after retiring from her R1 match at Wimbledon 2016. Her two tournaments towards the end of last year didn't get her a ranking. In the draw based on a SR 62. Doesn't appear to have played a pro match this year so far.
