Week 2 - Australian Open Qualifying (Hard)

Naomi is 7th seed and plays Von Deichmann in 1st Round (with Rus the other seed in her section)

Katie plays Kayla Day in R1 with Han and Kato the seeds in her section

Naomi v Rus, seeded to play each other in the last qualifying round would be a cracker of a match - I wish I could be in Australia to see that. I remember being on court to see Arantxa Rus knock out and completely outplay the then defending Wimbledon Champion, Sam Stosur, at Wimbledon a few years ago - she looked absolutely brilliant and I've followed her career for a lot of years, expecting her to do much better than she has done, and likewise I feel Naomi is much, much better than her ranking would suggest. Hope both make the final qualifying round and can't wait to see how that one pans out if they do - Naomi did play her last year and won, by the way.

Looks like Katie Boulter has a reasonable draw - maybe both of them could qualify, which would be brilliant.

Von Deichmann is a bit of a weird one - I've seen her play very clever, disruptive tennis and take (admittedly fairly ordinary) players apart...but also play passive, defensive tennis and get blown away.

Hopefully there will be good news for both overnight tonight.

I had been hoping that Laura might sneak in as well but evidently not. Presume though as she is in the doubles that she might be hanging around hoping for an alt spot.

I agree - nightmare to play against as she just gets the ball back in court and does little with it. Naomi will need to serve well and be patient.

Is there some sort of covert competition on to make the worst tennis website?
The 2018 Austraian Open rebrand is awful. I mean, it's not WTA website awful (heaven forfend); stuff at least... works... sort of, but boy! is it ugly.

Naomi 1-0*
Invoking the live stream from the website is not working, for me at least.

Naomi deservedly wins the first set, 7-4 in the tie-break. Although there are a lot of unforced errors...

Naomi was certainly going for the lines a lot - but she got more success when she mixed it up - some nice drop shots and lobs in there. And the comments made earlier today about Von Deichman are so true ..........
