RIP Jana Novotna

Very much saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of Jana Novotna from cancer at the age of 49.
A lovely player and person. Remembered especially fondly here for her determination, frailty and humanity in exploits at Wimbledon; and, of course, triumphing over it all in glorious fashion in 1998.

She will be sadly missed. Kindest regards, condolences and best wishes to all of her family and loved ones.

Jana Novotna, 1968-2017

So sad to hear this news. As someone whos wife has battled this terrible illness, it resonates even more.

Prayers with her family and loved ones

Jana had an amazing career and came across as a decent person in every respect a star that burnt brightly

I couldn't believe this when I saw the Beeb report earlier. Such a beautiful tennis game, such a lovely lady. She was great at commentary too. The world will miss you, Yana
My thoughts are with her loved ones.

Sad news.

Echo all the above thoughts.

She must have been one of the most popular Wimbledon winners when she finally won in 1998 after losing against Steffi Graff and all the tears.

Very sad indeed. I saw her play a number of time in the early 90's at Wimbledon. Loved watching her play.

Sad, sad news. Much too young but some great memories from her shortened life.

There have been several good articles in the Guardian. Most talk about her relationship with the Duchess of Kent from when she cried on her shoulder after her first Wimbledon final loss - choke - to Steffi Graf. The Duchess was then there for each of her two following Wimbledon finals, when she eventually found redemption...

This was very nice at the recent WTA event in Prague http://www.wtatennis.com/photos/touching-tributes-novotna
I hope, and trust, that Wimbledon will provide a similarly suitable commemoration during this years procedings.
