Leon Smith

Next week I will have the pleasure of meeting Leon Smith again here in Spain.  He is coaching the "Adult Academy" at La Manga, all week. Whilst I cannot participate, I intend to make an appearance on a couple of days at least and then on Thursday Evening, their is a Gala Dinner where Leon will be doing a question and answer session.

So time to get your thinking caps on everyone.  What questions do you want me to put to Leon ?

Do you think we should put our heads together and compile a blueprint for the running of GB Futures events ?  We have all come up with suggestions and ideas. Maybe we should present those to him.

I'd like to see a home nations futures stretch covering say England, Wales and Scotland run of say 6-8 in a row followed by maybe a challenger in each country after that gives a platform for the players and maybe publicised in a way to create public interest. This kind of follows on to my next point in that I'd also like to know if he feels too much emphasis and expense is saturated in the grass court season. We really need more tournaments outwith the month of June.

I'd ask him what are the main things he's seen that frustrate him about tennis in Britain. Or what changes he would make it it were down to him.

But depending on the tone of the Gala, administrative or heavy questions may not be fitting for the occassion.

I would ask him if he was the coach in charge of our current crop of top 200 junior ITF 15/16 year old boys what would he want to see in place in the U.K. to facilitate their development. Would he want to develop them through domestic futures if so how many or would he expect them to play a few but predominantly travel?

Is the event still on the horizon?
