US College Signings 2018 (and general college chat)

Eden going well. All I see is posts of her winning matches - no wonder her ranking has sky rocketed.

All the girls with national rankings are playing power conference tennis in the SEC, BIG 12 and PAC 12. Good to see them doing well playing strong opponents week in week out. With the lack of certainty around how the lower rungs of the futures circuit will change next year, I can see playing power conference tennis becoming an increasingly sensible way to go even just for a freshman and junior year.

Obviously the very best players will turn pro at 16/17 and play very little junior tennis in the last 12-18 months of their eligibility but for those playing on into their final year, even top 10 players, the best college tennis is at that 15k (very best NCAA singles finals? 25k level) and there will still be the opportunity to step out and play futures even WTA events.

Our two most highly ranked girls played in the PAC 12 tournament that finished this morning in Ojai, Emily adding to her trophy cabinet with a second PAC 12 team championship. Stanford beat UCLA in the final Emily loosing her doubles 6-7 (7-9) playing with Micheala Gordon (#3) against a well established pair in Terri Fleming and Jada Hart (#6) but clinching the championship with her court 4 win in the singles.

- Lauryn John-Baptiste's Arizona State (and she is making a big impact on a programme that didn't feature last year) went out in the semi finals. Indeed Lauryn and her partner (#16) were able to go one better than Emily and down Fleming and Hart in the doubles and Lauryn also Bageled Ena Sibhara the UCLA no 1 (#14) in the second but lost 6-1, 0-6, 6-3.

On the men's side Cal really missed Jack Molloy who couldn't play singles and got knocked out early doors by Oregan. Slightly frustratingly he won his doubles and singles match at no 3 in the end of season regular PAC 12 fixture so his loss just before the tournament a big blow for the tournament.

Utah also got knocked out early in their first round tie against Arizona Dan Little (JCH 192) playing no 1 lost 6-4 6-4 to Ukrainian Igor Karpovets (JCH 152) who was a futures doubles tittle to his name, played 16 futures tournaments and on one occasion won through qualifying making the 2 nod round in the main draw.

The BIG 12 ladies tournament is also going well for the most densely Brit populated team in the conference (with reinforcements on the way), Texas Tech. Ranked #12 They have breezed past Kansas and Oaklahoma State and are due to play conference big guns Texas in the final, exciting times for senior Sabrina Federici who both doubles and singles against Kansas dropped her doubles against Oaklahoma but was coming back in her singles despite loosing the first set when Texas Tech cliniched the win.

Saving the best news until last. The SEC ladies tournament has been won by Vandy but Florida, the perennially the best ladies team in college tennis got holed below the waterline when their top player Anna Danilina (#14) got taken out by LSU's freshman Eden Richardson (chuking in a first set breadstick) 6-1 7-5.

A cracking win for Eden who has had an excellent season playing number 1 in the toughest conference. Jodie Burrage and Emily Appleton held spots at Florida and Vandy, they will both be well inside the top 750 come the beginning of 2019 but Erin will be well placed if she can keep this up to have a crack at futures (and getting a rank quickly) if she can build on wins like this which should lift her ranking significantly.

Go, Eden ! Very pleased for her. I personally rate her far higher than Holly Hutchinson in terms of pro-tennis potential - do hope she'll give some ITF events a try-out some time soon.

She already has there was a 15k futures event in Charlston in September on the LSU roster. Eden got knocked out of the final round of qualifying. There is a big difference between the SEC and conference USA it would be like premiership to League 1.

The SEC is the most powerful athletic conference, college football has an enormous profile in the SE arguably bigger than the NFL (no argument in Alabama) and generally the standard of sports at LSU is as good as you get, one of the sprinters who graduated in May was sub 10 for the 100, sub 20 for the 200 and he's from Newham.

Shame for Sabrina Federici whose Texas Tech team lost to Texas, Sabrina did all she good left high and dry in doubles and singles, a set up in the singles.

Just wondering - do any of the experts on this thread know how Hamish Stewart is getting on this year in the US? I tried googling but don't really know what I'm looking for and didn't really come up with anything useful.

If you know which university the player attends you can check their result on www.itatennis.com

Looks as though Hamish is having a good year

Sorry looks as though the actual results have not come out!  Go to the website and scroll down on latest results, go to player results and scroll down to Tulane and then you should be able to see Hamish's results - hope this helps!
