Week 32 - WTA Premier 5 ($2.3M) - Toronto, Canada Hard

Heather got one of the 4 available Q v Q spots, which is good.
But, Naomi Osaka is going to be very tough nonetheless, especially on hard courts.

I see Hev retired. Does anyone know what's wrong with her? Poor Hev.

She was struggling throughout the match and eventually a physio came on in the 2nd.  Appears to be a shoulder or upper arm problem.

Jo will have to hit the ground running, as both potential opponents have won hard court WTA tournaments since Wimbledon.
Peng won in Nanchang two weeks ago, and Makarova won the title in Washington yesterday.
Any rustiness on her return to court might get punished by two players in form on the surface.

Let's see what Heather's situation is, and hope it doesn't lay waste to her season end, as she had potential to pick up significant points even with mediocre performance, given then end she had to last year.

As a scratch pair, they ran the specialists pretty close, but no dice.
R32: Johanna KONTA/Elina SVITOLINA (GBR/UKR) 651 (263 + 387) lost to Andreja KLEPAC/María José MARTÍNEZ SÁNCHEZ (SLO/ESP) 66 (32 + 34) 2-6 6-3 [6-10]

Yes, looks a very decent run out and hopefully helped get Jo back into the swing of things.

Only 3 of the top 12 have made any appearance between Wimbledon and Toronto. And given I am fairly certain Jo played more grass matches than any of them culminating in that Wimbledon run, her own three week gap in competition seems pretty sensible. Now let's see how Jo and the other top players get going again ( I see a Cibulkova win and an Ostapenko loss so far and of course the top 8 have byes and will face players that have won a round here on top of what other matches they may have had recently ). As said Jo could face quite a stiff first challenge.

Kate Makarova looked very sharp in dispatching Peng, to continue her good form.
Would not surprise me to see her upset Johanna, though, obviously, I hope not.

L32: (7) Johanna Konta WR 7 vs Ekaterina Makarova WR 42 (CH 8 in April 2015)

As said, Makarova was last week's Washington winner.

The head-to-head is 4-0 - Jo won in Eastbourne in 2015 & 2016 and at the Aus Open (R4 both times) in 2016 (8-6 in the 3rd) and 2017.

Though they've not actually met yet, Makarova is being coached by Nigel Sears. His commentary commitments mean he can't meet until New Haven apparently.
With 6 wins from 6 so far under the 'phone-coaching' regime, perhaps they should just keep on avoiding each other!

Should Andy risk suggesting to Kim that his in-laws seem best at the other end of a phone line ?

If Jo beats Makarova, Lucie Safarova awaits in the L16. She has just beaten (11) Cibulkova 6-2 6-4.

CiCi Bellis, aged 18 and WR 36, continues her upward momentum, beating (8) Kuznetsova 6-4 7-5.

Jo is due at not before 10 pm BST.
